About Richard

My love of teaching chess comes from my experience as a chess player starting from when I learned the game at just 11 years old. I started from the bottom, was mostly self-taught, and I eventually became a National Master. I know that hard work pays off when it comes to studying chess, as long as you study and train in the right way. I have several years experience taking people with little chess experience and greatly improving their game just like I did years ago.

Even though there are core concepts that every chess player must learn, all my lessons are customized to fit the needs of each individual student; I do not teach in a cookie-cutter fashion because everyone has different strengths and weaknesses and different ways of learning. I try to keep my students challenged, but not overwhelmed. I also assign homework do assessments to track improvement.

I am a National Master and have been playing chess for 15 years. I won the Washington State High School Championship three times and played for the prestigious UMBC Chess team. I have several years experience teaching as well tutoring all ages.

I am generally available after 5pm on weekdays and anytime Saturday and Sunday. I can travel a reasonable distance to students or meet them online. My base rate is $50/hr for in-person lessons and $40/hr for online lessons.

I look forward to hearing from you and good luck with your chess studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I have the National Master chess title (USCF rating 2200+). I also have several years experience teaching players of all ages and levels. I know how to teach chess and am experienced in teaching both in person and over the internet.
