About El

About Japanese:

El has taught Japanese to English-speaking students in Hawai’i, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, as well as English to Japanese students. She uses a multi-faceted approach to language learning; incorporating all components of reading, speaking, listening, and writing. El received her Bachelor of Arts degree with a minor in Japanese language in 2010.

About Music:

El is a clarinetist, improviser, and performance consultant based in Baltimore, MD. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Bucknell University, where she was awarded the Barbara Watson Grever Prize and the Bucknell Prize in Music. While at Bucknell, El studied clarinet with Elisabeth Stimpert (Alarm Will Sound) and Colleen Hartung, piano with Barry Hannigan, and composition with William Duckworth.

El continued to perform at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, where she studied clarinet with Henry Miyamura and did research in musicology as an advisee of Dr. Kate McQuiston. Her thesis research focused on free improvisation and improvisation pedagogy. Her favorite concert at UHM was the Contemporary Music Ensemble’s performance of Steven Scott’s Vikings of the Sunrise for bowed piano, performed with eight other UHM musicians and director Thomas Osborne.

El is a passionate advocate for free improvisation in undergraduate music programs. While at Bucknell University, she studied with percussionist and improviser Phil Haynes and performed with the Bucknell Interdisciplinary Improvisation Ensemble (BIIE). In 2013 she founded and directed the Hawaii Improvisation Intensive Ensemble (HIIE), which focused on teaching classical musicians to improvise and improve their performance skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Clarinet

I have been playing clarinet professionally for 10 years. I have studied privately with Henry Miyamura, Colleen Hartung, and Beth Stimpert. I have my undergraduate degree in music from Bucknell University and have done graduate work in clarinet performance and musicology at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.

Music History

I have a Bachelor's degree in music and have taken music history courses required of most college music majors, including major historical periods such as Gregorian chant, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th & 21st century, and the avant garde. In addition, I have done graduate study in musicology and taken courses in chamber music literature, music research and methods, and 19th century music & philosophy. My thesis research focused on the history of free improvisation and improvisation pedagogy.
