About Matthew

Hello, I have been teaching music for 7 years now. I also have coached track and basketball. I like to make learning fun and will relate things to everyday life. I believe that if a student isn't having fun while learning, then why would they want to push themselves? It has to be relevant and engaging!

I love helping students understand a variety of different topics. It really doesn't matter on what the topic is, I just enjoy helping people learn. In addition, I learn from my students on how to become a better educator. Every student has a different view or personality that I need to learn how to adapt to.

I am certified to teach K-12 music in the states of Illinois and Iowa. I have also taught in both of these states. I have taught vocal and band lessons, general music, choir and band. I have also coached middle school and high school track athletes. A few of these athletes did very well at the state level.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to push yourself to learn from a fun and entertaining teacher. I will make learning fun and I am very flexible with schedules!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

I have taught k-12 music for 7 years. During this time I have incorporated elementary math into my curriculum. I have also helped with RtI rooms and helped students with elementary math.

Music History

I passed the Music Theory AP Test in high school as a junior. I also passed music theory in college while pursuing my music education degree. I currently teach music history/general music to my middle school students.

Piano

I have been playing piano since the 4th grade. I have played piano for middle and high school musicals, concerts, college juries, and lessons. I also passed my piano proficiency exam in undergrad during my sophomore year.

Track & Field

I have coached middle school and high school track in the state of Illinois while teaching at the same time. I coached an athlete that placed 1st in the 400 at the middle school state meet. I have also participated in college track and field and still keep in shape today.

Voice (Music)

I am certified to teach in the states of Illinois and Iowa k-12 music. I am certified in band, orchestra, and choir. I have been teaching for 7 years. I have taught voice lessons before and currently teach choir.
