About Li-Kuang

My love of teaching is motivated by my passion for learning. Having tutored throughout high school and college, I have had the privilege of helping students with problem solving, concept understanding, studying strategies, and writing review. I have tutored a variety of subjects and enjoy helping students succeed, whether it is in elementary school reading, high-school algebra, or college-level physics.

More than facilitating academic success, tutoring requires relationship and confidence building. In addition to communicating the subject matter, I can connect with students, parents, and guardians from a variety of backgrounds. As an undergraduate at Duke University, I lived and worked with communities in multiple settings including India, China, Kenya, and the Dominican Republic. After graduating summa cum laude, I spent a year managing health programs in rural Haiti. These diverse experiences, combined with my strong interpersonal skills, enable me to relate to and understand students' unique needs, personalities, and learning styles.

As my title suggests, my tutoring is about you. Your needs and your goals. Your development and your success. Your preferences, personality, and learning style. I am dedicated to personalizing my teaching method and eliciting feedback to best empower you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I scored a 35 on all the sections of the ACT and have tutored math and math-related subjects (e.g. Physics) throughout high school and college.

Algebra 2

I have helped multiple students improve their grades in Algebra 2 and increase their confidence.

Chemistry

I minored in chemistry at Duke and succeeded in classes such as general and organic chemistry.

Chinese

I am a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese and took Chinese Literacy, during which we read articles and wrote research papers in Mandarin, in college. I can well understand people's struggles with things like intonation, and am familiar with both the traditional and simplified written forms of Mandarin as well as usages in Taiwan and mainland China.

MCAT

I took all the pre-medical courses in college and scored a 42/45 on the MCAT (15 Biological Sciences, 14 Physical Sciences, 13 Verbal). I tutored college-level physics for two years and have helped students with biology throughout high school and college.

Physics

I have helped multiple students improve their concept understanding and problem solving skills, boosting their confidence and performance on quizzes and tests. I am capable of explaining difficult concepts in a way that students can understand and tailoring my teaching methods to the student's unique needs.

Prealgebra

I have years of experience tutoring pre-algebra and other math classes. I am very patient and capable of explaining concepts in a way that helps students understand. I also make sure they understand by having them "teach back" to me, and master problem solving skills by repeated practice.

SAT Math

I scored a 800 on the SAT Math portion (both SAT and SAT Subject Test: Math II) and tutored math, including algebra to calculus, during high school.

One of the Best Tutors I've Had! — Li was an amazing MCAT prep tutor over the summer. As her title says, she is very patient, kind, and understanding when it comes to her students. Her knowledge of the material was outstanding and she was able to guide me in a simple and understandable manner. She helped clarify any questions I had (without making things confusing) and really went the extra mile in helping me grasp difficult concep ...
