About Yesenia

I was raised fully bilingual in a Spanish-Speaking household. I traveled to Puerto Rico every year during the summer and taught myself to read and write in Spanish. I took Spanish classes throughout high school and college to familiarize and teach myself the different aspects of the language, and perfect my teaching techniques. I have been a private tutor for over 9 years, and I have had an overall success rate of 98%.

I truly developed my love of working with others throughout my high school years. My first client was an 11-year old student who was going through a tough time with his parents' divorce. He looked forward to our weekly sessions and would often tell me about his week at school while we worked on his lessons. He was always eager to learn and the difference that I was able to make in his life was more than enough of a reward for myself. More recently, I worked a summer program teaching an integrated reading curriculum to inner city children who were enrolled in a free summer program. The parents of these children were often absent majority of the day into the evening and we were able to provide a safe, structured environment in which the children were able to access resources and lessons which they would not normally be able to gain access to. With these children, we played games, taught them about other subjects, explored art, and even took them on field trips. It was through this program that I developed a complete love for teaching.

I have also worked as an Early Intervention Assistant for children with Autism, and in my time when I was not in school, or tutoring, I would volunteer in Elementary schools with the school's social worker, running social skills groups as well as providing additional assistance in the classrooms. Through this I learned the best ways to work with a student, regardless of the age, is to approach each subject individually, and figure out what works best for the student, whether it be flash cards, written work, repetition, or even music and games. Each student is different and throughout my experiences I have learned that the most important part of being a tutor, is to cater to what works best for them.

I am Fully Bilingual, I have over 9 years of experience, and I am creative and friendly.

I look forward to meeting you and learning more about you! Contact me to get the best lessons you have ever received.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I taught Religious education for six years. I was able to teach lessons to young children in all areas of the Bible. I taught Saturday mornings for 1 hour and 30 minutes. I would also organize my own lessons to teach children the curriculum.

English

I am fully bilingual. I studied Spanish in both high school and college in order to perfect my language skills for teaching my students. I double majored in Spanish and Social Work. I have been a tutor since I was 16, and I am now 24. I interned teaching an integrated reading curriculum to elementary and middle school students in summer programs and taught religious education to elementary school students. I have also taught middle school Spanish and volunteered working with special needs children in elementary school. I have worked with high school students as well as college aged students, and I've given lesson to adults.

Literature

I was a full IB student, graduated high school with college credits for English as well as AP Lit, I have worked with students of all ages in reading comprehension in order to assist them with building skills for middle and high school. I have trained my students as young as 8 years old to be able to read and recognize context clues to answer individualized questions about their text, as well as to be able to textmark for later use. I have my students make lists of all important events, characters, and changes in settings as the story progresses. I also introduce them to literary terms such as similes, metaphors, hyberbole, alliteration, allusion etc... and teach them how to identify these literary terms in an author's writing, which is useful throughout high school as well as in all College English courses. I have taken extensive literary courses and have been working as a tutor for over eight years.

Reading

I interned teaching an integrated reading curriculum to elementary and middle school students in summer programs and taught religious education to elementary school students. I have also taught middle school Spanish and volunteered working with special needs children in elementary school. I have worked with high school students as well as college aged students, and I've given lesson to adults.

Study Skills

I have been working with students to improve their performance on all areas of testing. I teach each student the most effective methods of self teaching that caters to their personal learning styles. I also assist with physical and mental organization. An unorganized work space, binder, backpack, etc., often leads to a child that is disorganized and unable to find the proper tools to study appropriately, although they may already have them at hand. I teach my students to take effective notes, and to color code their notes and flash cards to better help memorization. I may also use repetition through writing, memory games, and songs. I am an ideal study skills coach.
