I have a Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate in the following areas; Early Childhood Education (PreK-3), Elementary Education (1 - 6), ESOL(PreK - 12) and as a
Reading Specialist. My certification is valid until 6/30/2020.

Work Experience:

I have worked as a school teacher for more than 20 years. In my earlier years I taught in classrooms, teaching grades 2, 2 and 3 combined, 3 and 4 combined and 5th. After receiving my degree in reading, I worked as a reading teacher for elementary students and one year with 7th grade students.

Most of my teaching experience has been in teaching ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages). As an ESOL teacher I taught all the regular curriculum (reading, writing, math, science, social studies) but I needed to teach it in such a way that students who were just learning English could understand. That usually meant finding others ways to teach the material than those the classroom teacher used. I found I enjoyed working with the smaller groups or one-on-one much more than I did working in a whole classroom.

Having worked in the public school systems, I am familiar with the IEP process and am comfortable talking with teachers about students’ IEP goals and working toward those goals.

Teaching Style:

In my teaching, I’ve often worked with small groups of 1 - 3 students, very much like tutoring.
Because I’ve had to explain Math, Reading Social Studies or Science to students who were learning English or to struggling readers, I’ve learned to explain things in ways and language that students can understand. I am very patient, and if students don’t understand, I assume it is because I haven’t explained it in a way they could understand and I try to explain it in a different way. Each student has their own unique ways of learning and I try to find what works for each student. I want to make learning enjoyable and fun so that students will enjoy the learning process and will seek out knowledge their entire lives.

ESL/ESOL

I have been an ESL/ESOL teacher for 16 years. I love working with English Language Learners! It is so exciting to watch and participate as they become more comfortable with English. Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

It wasn’t until I was in college, taking a Math for Teachers course, that I understood WHY math works. I, like so many students, went through school learning the steps to come out with the right answers without actually understanding the concepts of math. For several years, I worked as a Title I math teacher and discovered that I could teach math so that students could understand the concepts. I watched over and over as, “the lightbulb came on” for my students. I use concrete objects to help students “see” how math works. For many students, the visual image is the step that is needed to help understand the abstract concept.

Patient, knowledgeable, nice tutor

When we first met Anita we set some goals my husband and I wanted to achieve. Thanks to her, we learned a lot on grammar, syntax, vocabulary and we improved our listening and comprehension skills. Moreover, we learned so much about American culture, traditions and politics. Every lesson was different and it was set on our goals and requests. She has always been very focused on our passions, to make every class interesting and interactive. I would suggest ANYONE to ask Anita for classes as she can help every student (i.e. my husband was intermediate level, while I was entry level).

Very personable, organized, prompt and accommodating.

She was great in assisting my daughter with opening up to her so that she could assess exactly what course of action to take in tutoring her. She was very organized and efficient. My daughter has enjoyed her tutoring sessions with Anita G.

Excellent tutor

Anita is a great tutor. She's always on time. My daughter loved her after the first visit. My daughter seems to be a little bit more confident in class now. We hope she will be around for awhile.

Great first session... made my child feel very comfortable.

Loved the fact she took our feedback from the Teacher and incorporated it into the lesson plan. She made our child feel very comfortable. A very good fit for our soft-spoken child needing to build confidence in Math. Son gave her "2 thumbs up" :) Would definitely recommend her.
