About Nancy

Hello to all students who are looking for a patient and creative tutor who will work with you to do what it takes to help you set and meet your goals! Beginning with an assessment of your personal learning style and strengths/weaknesses, I will determine how to create priorities and find strategies that meet your individual needs. I will make sure that you are comfortable and satisfied with progress along the way. My number one goal is to use my skills from twenty years of teaching experience in order to help students learn, and to accomplish proficiency in the areas needed. I also aim to find out about your interests and how they can be tied to our work together to make it as interesting as possible; and perhaps even fun!

About me: I am a mother of two elementary age children. I have worked as a teacher in the public school system both before and after having children. I began as an elementary school teacher working with third graders, followed by a few years with fourth graders. Then, I worked teaching sixth-grade science and reading for four years in middle school. After returning to the elementary classroom for 9 years, I decided to focus my energies on individualised instruction through tutoring. My experience in the past year has been indicative of the wide range of students with whom I can work and accomplish great success. Prior to the past year, I spent most summers working as a tutor with students in reading, vocabulary development, phonics, writing, and math. I choose to be flexible about the location of tutoring sessions because I want students to be in the location that works best for them. If it happens to be at a room at the public library or a table at Barnes and Noble, I am happy to bring tools there, and perhaps even use the environment as part of the learning experience during our tutoring session.

I truly love tutoring because it allows me the one to one time to learn about, work with, and help make a difference in the learning and confidence levels of all kinds of students, which ultimately helps me to grow in my skills as an educator. During this past year, I have enhanced my skills by working more with students for whom English is not their primary language. No two students are exactly alike. I strongly believe that all students can learn, and will learn when given the right tools and provided with the appropriate level of guidance. Having the ability to find what fits for individual students is one of my strengths.

During middle and high school, English was my favorite subject. However, during elementary school, I cannot say that reading was my favorite subject. So, I did not have automatic success as a reader. I actually remember certain struggles that I had as a reader and writer. Fortunately, in middle school, I came across some great teachers, a tutor, and a new lease on reading and English. Vocabulary development strategies, full on grammar instruction, and interest in writing were all cultivated during this time. During high school, I even tutored younger students in reading and vocabulary. I also took an amazing Journalism class and became a successful reporter and editor for the school newspaper. As a college freshman, I began as an English major and then began working with children in a daycare setting. Enjoying my work with children, as a sophomore I decided to change gears to become a part of the Education program, yet still had a concentration with English classes.
As an adult, I have been a person who helps many friends and colleagues with grammar and writing, as well as many proofreading and editing tasks. Thorough proofreading skills for spelling, grammar, mechanics, as well as content flow, have been determined by fellow educators as one of my strengths.
As a recent graduate student obtaining my Reading Teacher certification, I had to work hard in order to maintain an A. I have to use certain strategies to this day that others don't in order to be a successful student. My recent experience as a student myself enhances my repertoire of skills to offer. So, I am an accomplished student who still loves to learn and strives to achieve the best for myself, as well as for any student with whom I work!

Although my most recent coursework is in the area of language arts, I also enjoy working with students using a cross-curricular approach which most certainly include fun work with math and science. Whatever your interests and goals, I can definitely work with you to make a difference. If you are an adult, I can effectively assist with English skills including language/grammar, writing/proofreading/editing.
I look forward to hearing from you so that we can begin a new and exciting adventure to help you enhance and develop your skills as a student and learner!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Currently I am certified to teach K-8, Elementary/Middle. I have my BA and Masters plus almost 60 credits in education. I have been a classroom teacher for over twenty years with experience teaching students in grade levels from K to 6. Additionally, I have a Reading Teacher endorsement.

Reading

My reading certification is current and was obtained from Goucher in 2012 as a part of a graduate studies masters program.

Vocabulary

I have experience with using a variety of vocabulary strategies to meet the needs of adults, including those for whom English is their second language. As a part of my masters work at Goucher (completed 2012), vocabulary instruction was a focus.

Writing

I have specialized training in writing instruction from Goucher and through Baltimore County Public Schools.
