About Noah

I earned a BA in Liberal Arts in 2010 from Gutenberg College in Eugene, OR. After spending two years working in a K-12 special needs classroom I moved with my wife and daughter to Jerusalem, Israel, where I have since pursued an MA in Bible and the Ancient Near East at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. During this time I have tutored Biblical Hebrew and ESL online.

I am passionate about all aspect of Biblical Studies! I have researched Biblical literature, history and culture at the graduate level for two years with the guidance of leading scholars in the field at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Understanding the cultural context of the Bible is, in many cases, the key to understanding the intended meaning of Biblical texts, and it is this relationship—between literature and culture—which I am particularly enthusiastic about imparting to students. In addition to Biblical culture, I am trained in textual criticism, historical criticism, and history of interpretation.

I have high proficiency in Biblical Hebrew, including historical development, Qumran Hebrew, and analysis of BH poetry. I have studied other Semitic languages as well (Akkadian, Ugaritic). I like to teach BH very systematically with plenty of exercise in reading Biblical Texts. Since BH is a dead language, I do not place much emphasis on vocabulary (that is what dictionaries are for!), but prefer to focus on the ins-and-outs of Hebrew grammar so that students can independently read, translate, and engage with commentary on Biblical texts.

I have studied Biblical Archeology for two years in Israel, under the direction of leading archeologists, and visited many sites in person. I specialize in Archeology of the Levant from the earliest finds to the end of the 1st Temple Period (586 BCE). I am thoroughly versed in Ancient Mesopotamian, Biblical, and early Christian/Jewish history. Although these nascent stages of civilization are of greatest interest to me, I have also studied History of Western Civilization extensively at both the Undergraduate and Graduate levels. I am invested in an approach to history which seeks the link between events and driving ideas and cultural forces behind them.

In addition to these topics, I tutor English, Grammar, and Proofreading/Editing.

I offer a free consultation meeting, so let me know if you are interested in tutoring and we can work out a plan that fits your needs!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
