About William

I am experienced in teaching English on both the high school and the college level. I taught Freshman English at Boston College, including courses in writing, surveys of English literature, and introductions to literary analysis. My MA degree in English was earned at Boston College. I also taught courses at Salem State University in writing and at Katharine Gibbs Business School in business communications. Additionally I have taught English and media courses in grades 9-12 in both public and private high schools. This includes courses in Advanced Placement English
I have also practiced law in Washington DC, having received my JD degree from Georgetown Law Center. My specialization was in labor law. This involved massive amounts of research and expository and persuasive writing and speaking.
Presently, I am volunteering as a tutor in reading on the elementary school level. My teaching methods are largely Socratic, asking the student to respond to questions of increasing difficulty and sophistication. I strongly believe in tying lesson plans as closely as possible to the work students are doing in the classroom.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
