About Meagan

I am a native English speaker and near-native Spanish speaker. I have been studying Spanish since the age of 12 and have a Bachelor's degree in Spanish and Latin American Studies from Ohio University and a Master's degree in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Florida. I also completed my PhD coursework in Hispanic Linguistics at the University of Florida. I was a Spanish instructor there for five years and taught a range of classes: Beginning Spanish I & II, Accelerated Spanish I & II, Intermediate Spanish I & II, Intensive Communication Skills, Spanish Grammar and Composition 1, and Introduction to Hispanic Linguistics. I also taught at Garrison Forest School for one year and taught Spanish I, III, III Honors, IV, and V.

I also have international work and volunteer experience. I lived in Pamplona, Spain for three months while attending Ohio University and I also lived in Cuenca, Ecuador for a year, attending CEDEI and teaching English there, as well (I hold a TEFL certificate from the TEFL Institute, which allowed me to do so). While living in Pamplona, I volunteered to be an English Conversation Partner at CNAI to native Pamploneses learning English. I also chaperoned two service trips, one to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, and another to Infierno, Peru.

Learning a language involves keeping an open mind. It requires one to embrace another perspective on the world, providing insight into the newly discovered culture(s). This can be particularly eye-opening for students who may have previously lacked an awareness of cultures beyond the borders of the United States. Without this cultural context, language seems artificial. Knowing that it is present all around us, particularly in an America with an increasingly significant Hispanic population, brings it closer to home for the students and opens them up to what the world has to offer.

My passion for Spanish in all its aspects guides me in my teaching and in what I would like to impart to my students. I sincerely believe that any one of them can have his or her life completely changed by embracing a new language and a new culture. Opening eyes, hearts, and minds is what I believe makes a great teacher, and it is what I strive for every time I walk into the classroom.

My goal is for every student to have a positive, productive, and fun tutoring experience. I want her/him to feel challenged, yet not overwhelmed. Each lesson will be tailored to each individual student. We will converse in the target language as much as possible to practice both listening and speaking skills. We will review material from previous sessions and set a goal for the current session. I will provide every student with timely feedback, as well as periodic progress reports and assessments.

I am available weekdays and weekends from 8am-7pm. I can meet with students face-to-face and online. My rate is $55/hour.

I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve success in Spanish!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
