About Michele

I am a college-level ESL instructor, with 16 years of professional teaching experience, both in the United States and abroad. I have taught adults (18 and older) primarily in university settings, though I also have taught at government and business venues as well. My classroom experience includes teaching groups as large as 45; in addition, I have logged hundreds of hours in one-on-one private tutorials. My one-on-one students come from majors and professions as diverse as studio arts, art history, nursing, bio-medicine, public health, engineering, journalism, computer science, forensic science, business, and various technical trades.

To date, my students represent more than 45 countries. Interacting with international adults continues to enrich my life in more ways than I can enumerate. Indeed, I believe I am incredibly lucky to partner with students as they take on the challenges of learning and mastering English.

My approach is an integrated one: My lessons typically address all of the ESL modules, which are listening, speaking, reading comprehension and vocabulary building, writing (academic, creative, and business), and grammar.

My education includes the following: CTEFL (Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language); Master of Art in Communication; Master of Science in Professional Writing, with an emphasis on teaching rhetoric to international students at the college level; and a Bachelor of Art in Art History.

Additionally--and critically--I lived overseas for a total nine years, in western Europe and southeast Asia, and I have traveled to more than 30 countries; thus I understand what it is like to feel disoriented when learning a new language and grappling with a foreign culture, all while trying to communicate effectively.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
