About Janet

A former education program director and naturalist at a non-profit educational farm, a director of a children's nature camp, a president of a nature preserve, an experienced biologist with a love for research, an avid writer and history buff - my diverse experience helps me to tutor effectively and work with most disciplines.

My goal is to decrease stress for students and families alike by helping students excel in their classes through advanced study skills and close review of assignments and classwork. I hold a B.S. in Biology and have taught, tutored, and run experiential learning programs throughout the past 23 years. I can tutor at the dining room table, out on a hiking path, or online. I aim to enhance a student's learning experience, and create momentum and motivation to understand the subject at hand. I specialize in sciences, geography, history, reading, comprehension, and writing, as well as math, elementary Spanish, and literature. I help extensively with study skills, note-taking, presentations, essays and research papers- reviewing, editing, and formatting.

Please contact me to discuss your needs. We will work together for optimal performance. I believe proper education is the key to a happy person and healthy community. My love for learning allows me to help you or your student with enthusiasm and positive energy. I follow-up with every major assignment and/or test to stay on track throughout the quarter, semester, or project cycle.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Botany

I excelled in my college courses of Botany, Plant Embryology and Morphology, as well as Plant Systematics. I have completed and presented research on Succession, Pistil length comparison in Arabidopsis thaliana vs. Brassica, and Wetland delineations. I have researched and presented a botanical survey as part of a habitat assessment of a nature preserve while also identifying a species considered extirpated from Pennsylvania.

Study Skills

I have tutored study skills to middle school, high school, and trade school students over the past ten years. I emphasize logical organization of notebooks, notes, and binders, as well as review of incorrect work. I encourage calm thought processes and logical breakdowns of quiz and test material as well as repetition of problem work in courses such as calculus and organic chemistry. I emphasize post-class reviews, instructional/conversational learning (as in having the student explain to me the concept in their own way) , use of flashcards, analogies, mapping, brainstorming, and Harvard notes when appropriate.

Swimming

I was a certified lifeguard, a WSI certified swim instructor, and a pool manager for over 10 years. I swam on swim team in High School for four years and helped out at swim team practices and meets at the Swim club I managed for three years. I have given lessons to all age groups and special needs children, including epileptic students. I have also given private and group lessons in ski and snowboarding to all age groups, adding depth to my recreation instruction experience.

Vocabulary

I am well versed on teaching standardized test vocabulary terms, varied approaches to studying unknown words, as well as discernment of terms in-text.
