About Deborah

I am an English teacher with five years of experience teaching in one of the most successful state secondary schools in England. I taught all abilities of learners from 6th to 12th grade, and was rated as an outstanding teacher in official observations, using UK national standards. I taught English literature and English language, as well as critical thinking. Before that, I practiced law in the State of Maryland for over ten years, honing my analytical and writing skills.

I am very proud that my students—regardless of their level of ability—were able to achieve better results than they were expected to, because I was able to teach them the skills they needed in order to understand, analyze, and interpret complex texts. These are the skills that your student will need in order to meet his or her full potential; love them or hate them, the requirements of the Common Core Curriculum make it clear that simply decoding texts is not enough. In order to succeed, students need to grapple with authors’ intentions, understand their context, and discuss the impact that the text has on them personally. And I can teach them how to do that, using both literature and literary non-fiction texts. Not only that, I can teach them how to express their ideas in interesting, coherent essays that will help them earn the grades they deserve. I can help improve their grammar and vocabulary, and get them to realize why these are so important.

In sum, I can help them succeed not only in English, including AP English, but in any subject in which reading comprehension and written expression are critical.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Literature

I have an honors degree in English literature from the Johns Hopkins University. I also taught English literature in a highly competitive high school in England, and helped my students achieve excellent exam results. I can teach you how to develop original and textually based interpretations of literary texts by looking closely at how authors use words and phrases to create meaning. You'll also learn how the context of the work you're reading influenced both its authors and its readers. Furthermore, you will learn how to put your observations into coherent and interesting essays that fully respond to the question you are being asked.

Public Speaking

I am qualified to teach public speaking because of my practical experience as a litigator; I had to present my client's case in a coherent manner while also thinking on my feet in order to respond to questions and objections. I also coached a public speaking team for the English Speaking Union secondary school competition for four years.

SAT Reading

I have taught high school English for five years, and have expertise in teaching students how to improve their analytical reading skills. Additionally, I taught Critical Thinking, where I taught students to closely analyze and critique a variety of non-fiction texts. Finally, as a practicing attorney, I was required to make sense out of complex documents, which in turn honed my own reading skills.

SAT Writing

I am a high school English teacher with five years of experience teaching writing. My students have greatly benefited from my instruction, and went on to do well above their expected outcome on their examinations. Additionally, I have a firm grasp on grammar and an extensive vocabulary. Finally, as a practicing attorney, I have had to write persuasive, expository, and analytical texts with clarity.

Writing

I have taught English for five years in an academically rigorous secondary school (grades 6-12), focusing primarily on teaching pupils how to improve their writing skills. I am also a practicing attorney. As a result, I have a wealth of experience in writing persuasive, analytical, and expository texts. Finally, I have excellent grammar, spelling, and vocabulary skills.
