Youngstown State Univ (Public Speaking)
This homeschooling mom of three understands the matchless value and beauty of one-on-one instruction. My oldest son graduated at 16 and began college. He now tutors for WyzAnt! My Homeschool has received biannual accolades from our state for the past 21 years. My 17-year-old graduated early and is a six time published author. My 9th grader has read at a college level since 5th grade, is a State and National Art award winner, and has represented Maryland three times in the National American Miss Pageant having finished first runner up, third runner up, and second runner up as Spokesmodel. Thus, public speaking is my expertise.
Providing Homeschool parents with tips, ideas, and strategies to make their homeschools a joy is another passion of mine. I won't just talk about your curriculum, I will help you find enrichment programs, social events and classes. I even know where to find textbooks for a penny or less! We can schedule PhysEd and Science Labs, for example, that will make your homeschool amazing. I will be right there to answer all your questions and to find you all the resources you may need. Two hour minimum per student regardless of age or grade is my normal policy. Let's talk if this rate is out of your range and/or you have multiple students.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Knowledge of the Holy Scriptures is absolutely essential to all of mankind whether faithful or not. I will guide you through thoroughly interpreting the Word accurately. You will be amazed at the inerrant and logical Truths contained within the Holy Bible as well as the so-called forbidden ancient texts. We will investigate Truths within the Nag Hammadi Scriptures as well as the Dead Sea Scrolls. There is little that you will not understand after our research. I have studied the Scriptures since 2002, being tutored by my Pastor for one year. I am a nationally certified Deaconess, and I have facilitated worship, Bible study, and prayer group in my home congregation for the past 4 years. I teach from all the ancient texts, and have been affiliated with various denominations over the past 20 years. Therefore, I am aware of all doctrines and dogma of Bible referencing faiths.
I homeschooled my oldest son from Pre-K through 10th grade, and he was eligible to graduate and begin college prior to 11th grade. I currently homeschool my youngest son who is completing 8th grade, but studying high school level texts. My homeschooled daughter is a 5th grader Who reads at an 11th grade/adult level according to the Bader Reading Assessment, and studies middle-school texts. I have homeschooled and passed every state assessment with accolades twice per year for almost 16 years.
The ability to speak properly is essential to all our relationships. I hope you will come to see that almost all speech is public! When we exchange ideas at school, work, and play, we are presenting an image of ourselves that is either positive or negative. When we meet others, we have only 3 seconds to make a first impression. Our words must be well-chosen and grammatically sound. My students will learn confidence, eye-contact, body language, proper diction, voice projection, body image, and vocabulary.
I have loved public speaking since I was 8-years-old. I would make up news stories and broadcast them for my friends. In junior high, I ran the school newspaper and lead the news team. I did the same in high school, but this time I ran the literary publication as well as served on our award-winning Speech Team. In college, I chose Public Speaking as my major, and delivered Eulogies and church-related speeches throughout my life. I still facilitate a home-church, still teach speech to my children in our homeschool, and I am always eager for an excuse to speak to the public.
Reading well is the foundation of all education. Comprehension is the foundation of all relationships. My children learned to read long before 'school-age'. A child will struggle in every subject until he or she learns to decode phonics and interpret the alphabet. I even taught an illiterate parent to sight read. I have a bias toward phonics, though, as taught in my home-school. I can teach anyone with a desire to learn how to read and increase one's comprehension.
Effective study skills are the foundation of learning. Students must be able to take good notes and build a learning tool from those notes. I will help you to choose key words in note-taking and guide you through the disciplines of good study habits by making what you are assigned to learn a part of yourself, and therefore, dreary studying is no longer necessary. We will learn rather than memorize.
As a home-schooler, my children have become experts at studying. There is no "homework" time, so I teach to study as you learn. I have taught effective study skills from the ages of 4 (learning phonics) to college level (undergraduate).
A strong vocabulary allows a student to communicate effectively, and to process and think efficiently. I have taught vocabulary in my homeschool for 18 years and believe its importance to be second only to reading.
