About Gavin

I have been teaching English around the world for nearly a decade. I saw it as an opportunity to practice two of my fervent loves: travel and words. Not only did my love of language and adventure grow with each new country visited, but it did so by reminding me what it is that I love so much about English: the grace of communication. English, unlike any other language in the world, offers the most diverse usage by means of vocabulary and syntax. We, as English speakers, are literally able to separate shades of gray. It's not easy to learn English, and even once learned, it is that much harder to master. How many people don't know the difference between "your" and "you're"? Or "its" or "it's"? How many struggle to understand words longer than five syllables? I, as an English instructor, offer more than simple fixes to common problems: I offer a foundation, and - after that - elegance. Communicating well is becoming a lost art, and I wish to be a patriot of language, not an archaeologist. As a tutor, I desire more of my students than rote understanding. I desire d'Artagnans of language; da Vincis of word; Earharts of pen. If that too is what you desire, then I look forward to working with you. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

I have taught English for eight years, my students and skill-levels ranging from absolute amateur to college-level prep. Regardless of my students' ability, my mainstay of subjects has always generally been Reading & Writing, Grammar, and Speaking & Listening. I have a degree in English from UMBC, where I currently teach English to ESL students who wish to attend university in the United States.

IELTS

I have taught ESL to non-native speakers for the past six years. The two tests that frequently come up in terms of need are IELTS and TOEFL, as (generally) one or the other is needed to attend university in the United States (which is often the goal of foreign students learning ESL). Thus, I've had plenty of experience helping students prepare for the IELTS exam.

Study Skills

I have been an ESL teacher and tutor for the past six years. The majority of my students have had to take TOEFL, IELTS, or exams for the high-school or college. I have helped them learn not only the language, but also how to approach the tests, how to study for the tests, how the tests are administered, and so on. Preparing students for these exams has been an integral part of my job.

TOEFL

I have taught ESL to non-native speakers for the past eight years. The two tests that frequently come up in terms of need are IELTS and TOEFL, as one or the other is needed to attend university in the United States (which is often the goal of foreign students learning ESL). Thus, I've had plenty of experience helping students prepare for the TOEFL exam.

Vocabulary

I've been an English teacher for the past six years, my students ranging in age from seven to twenty. I've taught at schools around the world, in a variety of capacities: test prep, ESL, reading & writing, and professional English. I graduated with a degree in English from the University of Maryland, and have had my hand in the field ever since.
