In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In addition to earning my BA degree in American Studies from UMBC in 2008, I received my AA degree in elementary education from CCBC-Dundalk in 2001. Since high school, I've also successfully worked with, tutored, and assisted various age groups of children in numerous aftercare programs and summercamps.
After completing UMBC's TESOL Training certification program in December '08, I am now a certified ESL teacher and tutor. I've also been successfully tutoring and assisting in ESL and related courses since 1993.
Since 1993, I've become interested in landscape photography during high school and began my first paid photography job in 2007 via SharpShooter Imaging and Ride the Ducks here in Baltimore. I've also worked at other similar local venues, such as Spirit Cruises and two summers with the DC Nationals. For the past three years, I've been employed as a professional yet untrained portrait and landscape photographer at the National Aquarium and have also worked for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Cirque du Soleil.
As a successful ESL tutor since 1993 and a certified ESL teacher since 2008, I've been improving my students' study skills in many ways. For example, I usually teach and encourage them to brainstorm and organize their thoughts out loud via outlining, creating literary webs, using flashcards, applying repetition, and giving random quizzes. These skills also tend to improve my students' essay-writing skills as well.
