My Philosophy of Teaching:

I believe that every child should have the right to be taught in a positive and safe learning environment by a teacher that has a love for learning. The only way a teacher is going to be able to touch his/her students’ lives is if he/she teaches to the whole child: cognitively, morally, emotionally, physically, and socially.

Gaining personal relationships with the individual students must be accomplished at the very beginning in order for the teacher to know his/her students’ individual learning styles and interests.

A combination of inquiry based instruction and differentiation of instruction is vital in an encouraging classroom atmosphere. I am a firm believer in inquiry based learning. In order for students to become life long problem solvers, they must make discoveries based upon prior knowledge and his/her own experiences. Every time a teacher plans a lesson, he/she should develop the core concepts and skills needed to be learned. After this, a teacher can differentiate his/her instruction by having students work individually, in small groups, or in large groups based on their individual needs. All students should be working on assignments at their own level. Students may be put into stations that are centered around the concept that they need to grasp before moving on. The groups that students are put into throughout the year may change consistently depending on the subject, interest, and growth of the child.

In order to manage a classroom effectively, a teacher must respect the students just as much as he/she wants to be respected. The teacher must accent the positive at all times. This emphasizes good behavior, and motivates the students to make the right choice. Students should be informed about the rules, consequences, expectations, and procedures at the very beginning. Students should feel an ownership of these rules and consequences. This can easily be done by having the students help decide what they will entail.

Giving all students choices is essential in a high-quality classroom. Allowing students to accomplish work that they are interested in will result in them being enthusiastic about learning. In addition, all lessons should be connected to the students’ lives in order for them to have a full understanding as to why they are learning what they are learning. This will lead them into becoming passionate about their work.

In closing, by achieving everything stated above, a teacher is instilling a love for learning into students and motivating them to become life long learners.

Study Skills

Helping a student with study skills involves becoming organized first. Showing students how to use different graphic organizers to help them study is vital. It is also important to be able to read the text book in an organized fashion, and be able to take notes by recognizing the main idea, and the most important supporting details. I student taught in a 5th grade classroom, and interned in a 5th and 6th grade school. I specifically worked in a study skills classroom one time a week. This involved sitting one on one with children, or in small groups. I either helped them to organize their binders, backpacks, supplies etc., or guided them through the process of making graphic organizers while reading text books in a particular subject that they were struggling with.

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

I have my masters degree in Elementary Education. I took a special education course in college, and am currently a regular education teacher with special education students in my classroom. Some of my students have and have had ADD/ADHD. I work very closely with these students as well as their special education teacher on a daily basis. Students with ADD and ADHD should work with hands on activities, as well as be provided with visuals during all lessons. It is important to get to know each student on an individual basis to understand their needs.
