I have a Master's degree in Liberal Arts and a B.A. in German with a minor in music. I lived and worked in Germany for six years, teaching English in a German trade school. I am fluent in German and enjoy working with students one-on-one or in small groups to focus on conversation practice and address the needs of students individually. My experience in the English classroom has helped me develop different approaches to teaching material to students with different abilities and learning styles.

I have nearly ten years' experience teaching private, individual violin lessons to elementary-aged children. Playing music is one of my passions and I love being able to bring the joy of playing an instrument to others. I play the violin and oboe in various small ensembles.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

I spent three years teaching ESL in Germany, as well as tutoring students after school. I would hold conversation hours in the evenings so students could come and practice their English in a non-classroom setting. I don't like to focus on book learning - instead I tend to use conversation or role-playing techniques to give the student a feel for the English language.

History

Music History,

Music History

As a music minor I completed a year of formal music history instruction. I have always been interested in both music and history, and living in Europe for six years allowed me to visit homes and museums of composers from several countries and from many time periods. Seeing the places where some of the world's greatest music was written helped me to internalize the feeling of the time and circumstances of when the music was composed. It brings a personalized experience that allows me to be passionate about sharing.

Violin

I have played the violin for 25 years and I have studied violin at the university level. I have played in numerous ensembles, including quartets and duets, orchestras, and I have performed solo work as well. I have experience with nearly all musical genres and after a student has acquired basic skills I like to let him or her explore genres he or she is interested in. I have never forced a student to play a piece he or she hates. I believe learning to play an instrument should be fun.
