About Allison

I believe in teaching in a manner that suits each student personally. I like to use manipulatives (to keep students interested) and books that students help choose (also for extending interest!). I think that the more fun we have, the more invested a student is in learning.
I am a certified, highly qualified teacher in Anne Arundel County, and I have experience in kindergarten, 1st grade, and 4th grade classrooms. I have tutored students in math and reading all the way through elementary school.

I have a Masters degree in Social Work as well as a teaching certificate from the state of Maryland. I believe that this professional combination helps me be a better teacher. I also have two kids of my own at home, rising 7th and 9th graders and their school experiences help me arrive at creative methods for teaching.

I can help the student who believes they hate math come to like it. I can help the reluctant reader get lost in a book. My goal is to help your student achieve academically and feel good about themselves along the way.

Elementary education these days has taken a huge step toward vigor and rigor. We are working our students harder and more efficiently and the common core curriculum gives us many tools to assist with those educational goals. I have classroom and tutoring experience with kindergarten, 1st grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade students in both reading and math subject areas and am familiar with common core resources across the board.
Send me a message and we can set up a program to help your child succeed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

Phonics is a big deal in primary education and is a crucial foundation skill for success in reading. I currently teach kindergarten and am living in "phonics world", since proficiency in phonics is essential for future reading proficiency. I am participating in the STARS training, which helps us as teachers better educate our youngest learn ears in the many skills needed for excellence in reading.

Study Skills

I am both an excellent teacher and an enthusiastic student. I have learned and taught many methods for making the most of study time, all of which need to be modified for each student. Some students need to increase stamina for extending study time, others need to filter our distractions, and still others need to know what is expected within the assignment.
