I used to hate math: the seemingly meaningless formulas, the tedious computations. If you would have told be 7 years ago that I'd be pursuing a career in math, I would've thought you were crazy! Luckily, a particularly impactful teacher completely changed my perspective. She and countless other educators have taught me that learning mathematics can both strengthen problem solving skills far beyond math class and help uncover hidden truths about the beauty of the universe.

Now I will give you a quick overview of my tutoring experience thus far. The first Math Class I tutored was Algebra 2. I started tutoring for about 4 hours a week during my junior year of high school. During my senior year, I was selected to be a senior mentor for Geometry and Algebra 1, essentially acting as a teaching assistant. I enjoyed tutoring so much, that I applied to be a TA as soon as I got to college. Starting my second semester (as a mathematics major at James Madison University), I tutored Calculus 1, 2, and 3 at the Science and Math Learning Center. I also tutored Chemistry at this time. Once I graduated from JMU, I was accepted to William and Mary’s Computer Science Master’s program. As part of my tuition award, I currently teach a 40-person calculus lab.

Here are some of the strategies I use to help keep my lessons as clear and effective as possible:
1. Adapting lessons in a way that works with your individual learning style.
2. Breaking concepts down into their simplest form and slowly progressing further in depth.
3. Fostering independent thinking through asking conceptual questions.
4. Helping ease math anxiety by working at a relaxed (yet efficient) pace.
5. Giving plenty of resources such as concept maps, worked out example videos, and lists of common mistakes.

Whether math isn't your forte, you are seeking a better grasp of the concepts and applications in your math class, or if you have any other math related need, feel free to contact me! I hope I will change your perspective on math, just as mine was change
