Hello there, and welcome to my profile! I am a recent graduate of St. John’s College in Annapolis, where I received a rigorous liberal arts undergraduate degree focusing on critical thinking and communication. At St. John’s, I received the award for best senior thesis, and I held a job as an undergraduate TA for three years. I am currently pursuing graduate studies in Musicology.

I started tutoring as a peer tutor when I was in middle school, and I have been tutoring ever since. I tutor all maths up through Calculus AB and Statistics; writing, grammar, English, and reading comprehension; and above all, I tutor music theory, history, cello, and voice.

My educational philosophy is centered around student independence and critical thinking. Of course we will work on the content of the subject, but above all, I want you to be able to troubleshoot questions on your own. I do this by encouraging students to talk through materials as if they were the teacher, and offering different strategies for solving any problem. Essentially, my job is to make myself obsolete.

As a middle school student, I struggled with Algebra 1. No one gets through the early stages of algebra unscathed, and I work to make that transition easier. I offer a critical focus on mathematical strategies and logical thinking that helps students understand algebra by understanding the fundamental problems they’re trying to solve. This eliminates issues of “formula memorizing” and fosters greater critical thinking skills.

I have always loved reading, and as an award-winning writer, I think I’ve honed a successful style of writing. I encourage content before form in thinking and writing, because what makes or breaks a student is the depth of their thought. On any given assignment, we can clean it up at the end, but having interesting thoughts and things to say is vastly underrated. As a tutoring, I seek to encourage both content and form for complexity of thought and a clarity of execution.

I have been a musician my entire life, and throughout that time, I have encountered music in many different ways. I began as a Suzuki-trained cellist, focusing on ear training and performance. Since then, I have become a professional singer, and I have moved over to the more academic disciplines of music; i.e., theory and history. I believe no musical education is complete or fulfilling without all of these components, and no one is a musician unless they are informed by theory, history, and practice.

As such, I hope to help students approach music thoughtfully and passionately as they strive to engage with some of the most beautiful works in the world!

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me. I love talking to prospective students, and I hope we can come up with a plan so you can develop!

Great experience

Lauren helped my son with calculus and music theory during the second semester of his junior year in high school. We had a great experience and I highly recommend her!
