About Timothy

I've been writing and editing magazine travel and lifestyle stories, including an award-winning monthly editor's column, since the early 1980s. Which is to say I have been a writing tutor since the early 1980s—because a good editor is first and foremost a tutor. As tempting and expedient as it might be to simply rewrite a poorly crafted article, it's far better to play the long game and teach the writer to give you the quality you are looking for in the first place. As editor in chief of Mid-Atlantic Country Magazine for 9 years and Chesapeake Bay Magazine for 18 years, I have done just that—elicited the best work possible—from writers of every stripe, from rank beginners to seasoned and widely published professionals.

Strong command of writing, editing, proofreading skills. Very large working vocabulary. Highly practiced proofreading and copyediting skills.

I have worked on Macintosh computers since they were introduced in the 1980s, and on Macintoshes exclusively since the early 1990s. I also have decades of experience writing and editing with Microsoft Word.

I hope you'll give me the chance to help you be the best writer you can be!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Proofreading

Having been editor of small-staff magazines for over three decades, I have literally thousands of hours of experience in proofreading and copyediting. I know proofreading marks by heart. Furthermore, I have developed effective methods for careful and thorough proofreading and fact checking.
