About Josefa Ysabel

I am a recent magna cum laude graduate, majoring in Spanish and minoring in Mandarin Chinese, Mathematics, and Music. My earliest experience of teaching was helping my younger sibling learn how to read during my middle school years. Then, in high school I participated as a volunteer teaching Spanish to elementary school students, and in a separate ESL program, as a volunteer aiding teachers. I also briefly substituted for my violin teacher, and finally, in college, I tutored Calculus and was hired as a TA's assistant to help students in a Calculus based Physics course. In each of these varied experiences, I have learned that I love working with students and have the patience and drive to help them understand new or difficult concepts.

In the future, my goals include applying for graduate school to research language acquisition and foreign language education, so I hope to gain as much experience in the meantime working with students and helping them enjoy learning a new language.

I minored in Mathematics, taking classes such as Calculus, Linear Algebra, Introduction to Differential Equations, and many others. Although I have some experience tutoring Calculus, I am most comfortable teaching lower-level math classes such as Algebra 1 and 2 since I often help my little sister with her math homework. Hearing many classmates complain in math classes, I believe that it is important to keep in mind the applications of math problems and skills. Therefore, I hope to inspire students to be able to appreciate the usefulness of mathematics in our daily lives.

I have been learning foreign languages, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese, since middle school and college, respectively. I studied abroad in Spain for a semester and later on, in Taiwan for six months. Being a passionate student of foreign languages, I understand the difficulties in the road to fluency and how to overcome these obstacles. I hope to share to students the many activities I have adopted over the years to practice Spanish and Chinese. Since Spanish is my major, I am able to tutor advanced Spanish students. Being my minor and my most recent language, I am able to tutor only beginning Chinese students (I read and write primarily in Traditional Chinese Characters, but I am willing to work in Simplified to meet students' needs).

Throughout my schooling, I have discovered that it seems not many people like Mathematics and those that have learned foreign languages to fulfill requirements forget what they learned soon after graduating. I would not only like to help students advance in their studies, but also allow students to form good study habits that will enable them to better internalize what they are learning so that they may use it in the future.

Let me show you that learning math or foreign languages is not as complicated as it may seem.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I was a Mandarin Chinese minor in college and I studied abroad in Taiwan for six months. I also obtained a Level 3 in the TOCFL test for Listening and Reading Comprehension during May 2, 2015. I have a lot of experience in teaching languages and am currently a volunteer ESL teacher. I have also recently started taking TESOL post graduate courses, where I have learned of methodologies and approaches to teaching foreign languages.
