About Staci

I have been tutoring for the past three years in a variety of subjects, but predominantly in chemistry and high school math classes. I believe my greatest strength is teaching students how to learn on their own. Ultimately, a tutor should not be a crutch but a facilitator towards independent learning. My hope is that all my students grow out of my services.

I have a degree in chemistry from Middlebury College - a small liberal arts college in Middlebury, Vermont - and will begin my PhD at Yale next Fall. At the collegiate level, a chemistry curriculum is a beautiful blend of chemistry, math, and writing. Therefore, I have confidence that I can help you achieve success in any of these three integral subjects. Hopefully along the way you'll catch my contagious love for these subjects as well. :)

Chemistry - at any level - is my specialty and my favorite. It is something that can be reasoned and does not require that you memorize your textbook. It does require that you think and sometimes that can be hard, so I'm here to help you figure out what questions you should be asking yourself to expand your thinking. Coincidentally, the subject utilizes mathematics to explain many fundamental principles. This is another stumbling block that chemistry may pose for you and I'm here to help you in that arena as well.

Because of chemistry's reliance on mathematics, my facility as a math tutor is greatly enhanced. My chemistry courses were the ones that taught me the language of math. I had to understand formulas to understand chemical principles. Therefore, I know how to communicate many applications to mathematical concepts that seem irrelevant or too abstract in an isolated math class. In tutoring students in algebra, geometry, and calculus, often times students do not see what they're doing. My goal is to help my students visualize what the symbols mean on their page. I believe math is much more than just manipulating variables. Not to mention, math becomes way more interesting when you can see that math is everywhere in our world.

I also tutor for many standardized tests. Specifically the GRE (the Graduate Record Examination), which is like the SAT for graduate work. I have experience tutoring for the SAT and ACT as well. Similarly, AP exams and SAT subject tests are always a fun endeavor for both the student and myself. Each test requires its own specialized strategy, and I'm here to help you through them all!

Tutoring has become a passion of mine over the years. Watching someone go from a frustrated student to a blossoming learner is rewarding beyond words. Moreover, I love getting to know my students and try to illustrate how their studies may be relevant to their interests. Additionally, I alter my tutoring style from student to student: some students need someone to push them; others require a more relaxed presence.

Contact me for more information! Ask me anything: references, further credentials, favorite color, etc. I always respond to texts, calls, and Wyzant emails.

I'd love to be your tutor!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra is the first stepping stone to a road of required mathematical courses. I have experience both challenging students who want a "leg up" and working with students who have difficulty with fundamental concepts. I believe that no one is "bad at math." There are many ways to approach algebra, and thus there are many ways to explain how to work through a problem. Let's figure out which way makes sense to you.

Algebra 2

Algebra II is a doozy for many reasons. Some schools teach it immediately after Algebra I, others sandwich geometry between the two algebra classes. This latter scenario can be difficult, as it requires the student to remember all the fundamentals from Algebra I despite the year hiatus while taking geometry. Moreover, Algebra II in general is simply more difficult. It requires more abstract concepts that don't seem readily applicable to every day life. Still, there are many ways to approach algebra, and thus there are many ways to explain how to work through a problem. I hope to show my students that they can be creative in this seemingly rigid world of mathematics. Let's figure out how to make sense of Algebra II for you!

Chemistry

Chemistry is by far my favorite subject. I've spent the past three summers working in different chemistry research labs (e.g. University of Michigan, Middlebury College, and National Institute for Materials Science), and I will begin my PhD studies in chemistry at Yale in the Fall of 2017. So I am very aware of its application to the "real world."

That said, I know the subject can be a daunting endeavor for a student as it combines abstract concepts with concrete algebra. But I can help make those concepts more tangible and transform the algebra into plain English. I bet by the end of the session you'll have smiled at least once - I can't help but have fun when it comes to this subject! --

I tutor all levels! Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. :)

College Counseling

First and foremost, I worked in the admissions office all three years at Middlebury College. I started as a tour guide, and by senior year I had the honor of being an admissions fellow. I was giving biweekly information sessions, speaking with prospective students and families, and even sat in on an admissions committee! Now I am an alumni interviewer for the College. Additionally, I transferred from USC to Middlebury my sophomore year - so I've gone through the college application experience twice!

College counseling has almost become a hobby of mine. I feel I have a good grasp of the admissions process and believe it should be an introspective experience. Therefore, it should be rewarding and not painful or excruciating. I personally know both the heartache and excitement of being rejected and accepted (and waitlisted!!). I am also intimately aware of the financial restraints and burdens that a college education may cost.

Let's find you that perfect fit and work on crafting that killer essay!

Geometry

Geometry is probably the most incredible math class that any high school student has the opportunity to enjoy. It is a class where students get to see math right before their eyes. That said, in high school I did not appreciate the subject. In fact, it was my least favorite math class I took, so I can sympathize with your distress. Upon graduating from college and revisiting the subject for fun, I've grown to see its beauty and hope to reveal it to you. I would love to help you with geometry and to show you why it's so incredible. My hope is that you'll grow to even like it yourself!

GRE

There are many solid study guides out there, but if you're looking for one-on-one help, tips, tricks, and strategy I can be your one stop shop for it all. I recently took the GRE and scored within the top 10 percentile in all three sections. I am not a natural test taker, but I believe through my studying I figured out how to tackle the test most effectively. Contact me for more information!

Organic Chemistry

I know that Organic Chemistry can be a daunting subject - especially if you try to memorize all those mechanisms! My advice: don't memorize it all. I have a BS in chemistry and my obsession with periodic trends allowed me to get through organic chemistry without a single tear! My tutoring sessions will be geared towards your needs, but I won't let you finish an hour session without referencing your periodic table. It will be your trusty guide throughout the course and will allow you to crush the class with a smile. I've tutored many college students in this subject with great success before joining WyzAnt. Let's make orgo more about problem solving and less about memorization.

Precalculus

If you're in Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus, that means you did something right in Algebra II. Some of you reading this may not feel that way - and may even have had a visceral reaction from me even suggesting that you accomplished Algebra II with a gold star. But truly, if you're in Trig, you should have confidence simply by making it there. That said, I know the content is hard... significantly harder than Algebra II. That doesn't mean you can't make sense of it all and succeed. I'm here to help with the content and show you that you can make it.

SAT Math

The SAT does not always immediately display your potential. When hoping to show colleges you're worthy from a single number, anyone would feel some anxiety. I'm confident I can help you overcome both the psychological and technical aspects of the SAT. I will help you figure out what test-taking strategy works best for you by observing *how* you take practice tests. And of course, we won't ignore the content. The more practice you do, the more familiar the test will seem, and the more comfortable and prepared you'll inevitably be! :)

I've been tutoring students in various levels of math for the past 3 years. If you need help with the basics, I'm happy to get you up to pace. If you're wondering how this will be applicable to your future - whether that be your next class in calculus or your future career in finance or whatever it may be - I'm here to help you make see its relevance. If you just want to keep your head above water, I'll help you stay buoyant and guide you to the shore. :)
