About Lyndsy

I currently teach in Anne Arundel County Public Schools as a special education teacher. This fall will be the start of my 8th year of teaching. I have taught in co-taught settings as well as self-contained settings.

Although I do not have any experience with tutoring I am looking forward to working with students of all ages!

I am currently attending the University of Maryland and working towards obtaining my master's degree in the area of TESOL. I am aware of numerous teaching strategies that have been proven effective to help English language learners acquire English.

I have been a special educator for 7 years. I have an extensive knowledge of teaching strategies and methods to make learning challenging curriculum easier for students with special needs. Learning and education is not "one-size-fits-all." Instead, each students' individual learning needs must be considered and materials and teaching should be altered to meet the needs of the students you teach.

I have been a CrossFit Kids coach for 4 years. Through each work out, my role as a coach is to safely expose kids to various movements and exercises and explain the benefits of maintining a healthy lifestyle by making healthy food choices.

In addition to being a CrossFit Kids coach I also coach a junior varsity high school field hockey team in Anne Arundel County.

I am excited to begin helping others through tutoring!

Weekends work best for me now but I am flexible! Please contact me to set up a lesson!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Fitness

I have attended a CrossFit Kids intensive weekend course to learn about the methodology behind CrossFit Kids, the fundamental movements and how to teach them, and the importance and benefits of healthy food choices for kids. I have taught CrossFit Kids classes at two CrossFit gyms in Annapolis weekly for 4 years. I also have coached JV high school field hockey for 3 years at a high school in Anne Arundel County.

Phonics

I have used several reading programs over the 7 years of being a special education teacher. PCI is one of the programs I have used. This program is specifically designed to help students with developmental disabilities, autism, and significant learning disabilities learn how to read. The program utilizes visuals, repetition, and hands on practice through tracing the word in order to help students learn new words and vocabulary. Corrective reading is another program I have used which focuses on building and improving students' decoding skills. Wilson Reading is another multisensory program which focuses on teaching students effective decoding skills.

Special Needs

I have been a special education teacher for 7 years and will begin my 8th year this fall. I differentiate instruction and materials to fit the individual learning needs of the students I teach. In addition to differentiating instruction, I implement effective teaching strategies (such as using manipulatives) to help make the curriculum more accessible for my students. I constantly assess my students' progress through formal and informal assessments. The data gathered through these assessments help me to determine the appropriate level in which instruction should begin. It is also important to incorporate the strengths and past experiences of your students into your teaching to help them reach their full potential academically.
