I have been living Math and Science all my life. My mother was a math teacher, and inspired and challenged me at an early age. In my 43-year career with NASA, I developed a broad range of technical skills, with emphasis on physics, engineering, and the supporting math. Outside of my work, I have always had relevant hobbies--ranging from math puzzles to the repair of antique radios.
In my professional life, I was involved in a variety of training and mentoring activities. Since retiring, I have tutored at the Sylvan Learning Center and--most recently--have served as a substitute teacher at the Key School in Annapolis. I have also continued private tutoring. A particular skill is helping students relate to complex problems using real-world examples. Any tutoring assignment will begin with an evaluation--with the objective of establishing a mutual understanding of where the student needs help. Next, I observe how the student approaches a problem in order to assess where the "sticking points" are. The end objective is for the student to recognize the issues and develop solutions that work for them. I have been living Math and Science all my life. Lessons are 1 hour minimum and 1.5 hours is recommended. For travel more than 5 miles one-way, there will be a rate adjustment.

Mark did a great job helping my daughter work and visualize her formulas. He was patient, attentive and took time to understand her approach to learning. Mark is very knowledgeable about all aspects of photography. I want to understand light metering and he explained how light works in relationship to an external meter as well as in the camera. Excellent lesson.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have been an amateur photographer all my life. I have worked with a wide variety of cameras, including film and digital, and I have extensive experience in darkroom work and in digital processing and printing.
My career with NASA centered on camera systems for space missions, beginning with the first mission to Mercury in 1973.
Through my hobby and work experience, I have lots of practical experience backed up by a comprehensive understanding of the physics.
My formal training is in Electrical Engineering, with an earlier major in mechanical engineering. In my career at NASA, I worked on many systems which required an advanced understanding of Physics, including optical systems, solid-state electronic devices, and orbital mechanics.
