The world we live in is full of questions and mysteries waiting to be discovered and investigated. Mathematics is the study of patterns in the world around us. As a mathematics tutor, I strive to provide a positive learning environment where students can strive for excellence in critical thinking and problem solving. My mission is to help students develop an intellectual toolbox which can help them solve a broad range of problems. My teaching style is Socratic and emphasizes the cultivation of good habits of mind. I believe that the best way for students to learn mathematics is for them to encounter and wrestle with challenging problems they may not know how to solve immediately. A student learns the material better when they discover the ideas for themselves rather than be told by someone.

In each session, the focus will be on conceptual understanding rather than mere application of rules and procedures. I can coach students needing help in any subject from algebra to calculus, discrete mathematics, linear algebra, and logic for success both inside and outside school. Having tutored mathematics at the college level and worked at several gifted summer programs, I also have experience in mathematical problem solving and working with advanced students. Therefore, I can also provide a rigorous and challenging curriculum for students either seeking additional enrichment or develop advanced problem solving skills needed for success in major math contests.

I hold myself and my students to high standards. In addition to knowledge and skills, personal qualities such as curiosity, persistence and attention to detail are highly encouraged. Sometimes, I may assign take home work for additional practice. Also, I try to be flexible with time. While I do have a 12-hour cancellation policy, I do offer makeup classes.

If you are interested, please contact me so we may set up a free consultation meeting. I look forward to hearing from you!

Calculus,

Calculus

I have tutored undergraduates in introductory calculus courses for three years. From my experience, when students have trouble in calculus, it is often because their foundation in mathematics is not as strong as it should be. My goal is always to identify which areas of a student's foundation need improvement and to help a student become stronger in those areas.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I have participated in math competitions during high school and studied mathematics deeply during college.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I have studied mathematics at the undergraduate level and have tutored introductory calculus students for three years. Often, this requires helping students with reviewing precalculus. In addition, I have worked with precalculus students during my volunteering with Study Zone.

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

I have studied mathematics extensively at the college level and have taken upper division courses in Combinatorics and Graph Theory, Introduction to Mathematical Reasoning, and Discrete Mathematics. Having done so, I have much experience in theoretical mathematics and writing proofs. I have also participated in and helped create high school math contests which cover this topic quite frequently.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I have studied mathematics as an undergraduate and taken both an introductory and advanced linear algebra course which cover elements of Abstract Algebra. Hence, I am familiar with Linear Algebra from both a theoretical and computational perspective.
Logic,

Logic

Having studied theoretical mathematics and philosophy at the undergraduate level, I have completed a rigorous course in mathematical logic and had much experience with proofs. In addition, I have been a teaching assistant at the Center for Talented Youth (CTY) for Introduction to Logic and been a calculus tutor in college. My tutoring approach is Socratic, and I generally use a problem-based approach to learning.

Chess,

Chess

I have played chess competitively for the last fifteen years at the tournament level. I have been coached through middle school and high school. I have also participated in USCF (United States Chess Federation) tournaments through high school and college, and have a rating of about 1600. In addition, I have some experience coaching elementary school students in chess.
Table Tennis

Table Tennis

I have played table tennis competitively for the last four years as the team captain of my college's table tennis club. Prior to that, I already had four or five years of experience playing table tennis.

Pre-calc stress has vanished

It's great to have weekly sessions with Aakarsh because grades have improved, but just as importantly, confidence has gone up and stress has gone down. The extra math help has made all the difference.
