Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

Small business owner for 10 years before switching career to teaching language arts. Associate of Arts in Business Administration with a 4.0 GPA.

ESL/ESOL

As a second language speaker (i.e., Spanish), I am uniquely qualified to teach English as a second language to non-native students.

I use lexical mnemonic techniques and graphic organizers to teach. I also urge my students to read as much as possible. Unfortunately, the English language is idiomatic, and in many cases there is no rhyme or reason for the order of prepositional phrases or clauses, choice of preposition in sentences, etc.

For the last two years, I've tutored Korean-American students in grammar, vocabulary improvement, SAT and TOFL test preparation.

Praxis

I have passed the Praxis content exam (English) as well as the Praxis pedagogy and am licensed teacher in the state of Maryland. Moreover, as you can see from my credentialed subjects, I am quite adept in English, including writing and literature.
