I have my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Engineering and worked with the National Labs and General Motors for 15 years before choosing to share my love of math and science with students. I was teaching STEM in the public schools in the 1980's, long before "STE(A)M" became a word. I have my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Engineering and worked with the National Labs and General Motors for 15 years before choosing to share my love of math and science with students. I was teaching STEM in the public schools in the 1980's, long before "STE(A)M" became a word. My husband and I were working in Mexico at the GM Mexico Technical Center, so we returned home to Ohio where I received my Masters of Education from THE Ohio State University (yes, we love football). I have taught in both public and private schools, and am now a Home Hospital Teacher for Frederick County Public Schools, which means I teach all grades and all subjects!

My personal teaching philosophy is that all students deserve to learn and that you will need to be versed in "21st-century learning skills" to thrive in a marketplace that doesn't yet exist. Being an engineering supervisor taught me how critical it is to understand math and science at a deep level, but also to be able to write with clarity and precision. Creativity, perseverance, working well with others, contributing to a team, while still being able to work independently are equally as important.

I have taught math to all ages from PreK-12, the earliest math through AP Calculus. I have worked with students who struggle and dislike math and those who are highly gifted and love it. My goal is for ALL students to feel competent and confident, enjoy, and more importantly, to understand mathematics at a foundational level so math makes sense!

I have taught Chemistry, Physics, and Physical Science in addition to math and language classes. I am on the faculty at Johns Hopkins University School of Education teaching Chemistry and Physics to teachers in the STEM Instructional Leader Program. I am also updating my book, Number Sense and Number Nonsense: Understanding the Challenges of Learning Math, which I wrote with Dr. Nancy Krasa. In writing and now updating that book, we have read literally thousands of research papers on how the brain learns math, what can go wrong, and what teachers can do in the classroom.

I had the joy of working for 5 years at Marburn Academy, a school for bright students who learn differently, primarily struggling with dyslexia, math challenges, and ADHD. I was trained as an Orton Gillingham tutor for students with dyslexia and have well over 300 hours of supervised one-to-one OG tutoring experience (sequential, multi-sensory, individualized). A fellow of the Academy of Gillingham Practitioners and Educators read my lesson plans and watched my lessons either in person or via tape. I also taught OG lessons in a whole-class setting from the very first sounds to Greek and Latin roots for 5 years. For three summers, I was the Summer Language Program Supervisor responsible for intake testing, approving all student reports, and supervising instruction. As a middle school teacher, I had students join my classroom barely able to read and comprehend and leave with scholarships to engineering schools, drama schools, and ready for college. We stay in touch today and I'm so proud of their hard work.

Tutoring students with dyslexia, who often also struggled with reading fluency and comprehension, written fluency, handwriting, and overall organization involved working with the whole child and the family. While at Marburn Academy, I also taught using Dibels assessments, Learning Without Tears (formerly Handwriting/Keyboarding Without Tears), Wilson, and Lindamood Bell Visualizing and Verbalizing. Marburn Academy developed and honed processes called Writing Small, where students begin writing with manageable chunks using poetry, and our writing fluency program which I can teach parents to implement at home.

As the Maryland Science Olympiad State Director emeritus, coach, Forensics and Crime Busters exam writer, and college mentor, I have the pleasure of working with thousands of teams and college students in Ohio, Maryland, and DC. I live in the Frederick, MD, area, but am available for video tutoring sessions worldwide.

I have two sons, an accountant in DC and the other in Law School at Ohio State who is engaged to one of my former 8th-grade Algebra students! I have a great sense of humor, have extensive experience working with all ages, and want to see you succeed and build confidence. As my students once wrote on my teacher evaluation, "What we love about Mrs. Shunkwiler is that she has kids, so she gets us. What we don't love is she has kids so she gets us." In other words, they weren't coming up with too many antics that I hadn't already seen before! Please contact me to learn more and to schedule your path to understanding.

Common Core

I am a faculty member at Johns Hopkins University School of Education teaching Common Core State Standards in ELA and Mathematics to teachers in the STEM Instructional Leader Program. I have extensively researched the CCSS in mathematics as the author of Number Sense and Number Nonsense: Understanding the Challenges of Learning Math, which I am in the process of updating for the second edition. I have been a classroom teacher for all levels of mathematics since the implementation of CCSS, from elementary through AP Calculus. I not only know the standards through personal usage, and the math content through teaching it, I have taken numerous classes and webinars to prepare for teaching CCSS to pre-service teachers.

I was a classroom teacher in 2nd/4th/6th grades, and long-term substitute in all elementary grades. I have extensive experience with dyslexic students learning to read/write/spell PreK-8th and am on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Education in the PreK-6 STEM Instructional Leader Program. I have extensive tutoring experience with elementary students who struggle in both language and in mathematics, with Orton Gillingham, Stern Math, and Learning Without Tears formal training.
Spelling,

Spelling

I am a trained Orton-Gillingham tutor for both reading and spelling. I have worked with students from PreK through college, teaching phonological awareness skills, word attack tools, and spelling rules and generalizations. For older students, we analyze syllable types and spelling patterns using roots and affixes (prefixes and suffixes) to build multi-syllabic words. As students master earlier levels, it is helpful to teach the meanings and spelling of the highest OG level, Greek and Latin roots to prepare students for vocabulary they will see in high school, on the SAT & ACT tests, and in college.

I am always adding to my toolbox of digital study tools for students in today's DLE (digital learning environment).

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have taught elementary through high school math, from Pre-Algebra through AP Calculus. I love teaching the whole range of math classes because I am able to show students how what they learned in prior years applies now and how it will show up again in later years. Prior to becoming an educator, I was an engineer for nearly 20 years, most recently at the General Motors Mexico Technical Center. My students appreciate real-world examples of how math and science apply (and the fact that I have two sons just finishing college so I can relate to young people). I have been a classroom teacher, tutor, and college faculty member sharing my love of math and science with the next generation of students and educators. I am the co-author of a book that contained findings from over 3000 research papers, and we are in the process of updating and revising the book.
