I am a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, and multi-talented educator with over 2 decades of teaching experience. I was born in Chicago, IL; lived in Seoul, Korea; Frankfurt, Germany; Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan; and Beijing, China. I have acquired 4 degrees, ten languages, and traveled to over 33 countries (all in the northern hemisphere).
My students know me to be personable; I have good rapport. I understand that students have different learning styles, so I try to tailor the learning experience so that the student experiences success. Tutoring allows me to work with a student one-on-one and at a pace that is comfortable for the student.
I've taught Middle School & High School math for over 6 years, 3 of which were full-time at an international school. I took both the SAT and the Korean version of the SAT and did extremely well in the Math sections. (Math is in my blood--part of my Korean background, haha.)
I've lived in Germany for 4 1/2 years. I attended the local Gymnasium--their word for high-level Middleschool & Highschool. I've also lived in Kyrgyzstan--a former Soviet Republic--for 9 years, so I'm fluent in Russian as well. I have TESOL certification through Trinity College, London; I can also teach Korean.
I've pursued a piano performance degree and graduated from a well-known Central Asian conservatory with flying colors. I had held piano recitals, performed with orchestra, have attended international musicians' seminars, had a musical session with Yo Yo Ma, and have taught Conservatory-level students.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Adaptive and gifted pianist/instructor
Kiona taught all three of our young children piano. Kiona quickly assesses skill, interest and attention span, and adapts her teaching to each individual. I am amazed at her talent and their interest! Thank you Kiona!Heather, 1 lesson with Kiona
First lesson review: Positive demeanor, with lots of enthusiasm
Kiona has a wonderfully positive demeanor, with lots of enthusiasm. I was able to explain what I am hoping to accomplish and why I want to learn Russian, and I felt that that turned that a motivating factor for Kiona too. I felt she was really working with me and trying to keep me going through the tough spots -- and there sure are a lot of those in Russian. I'm quite excited about the next lesson!Steven, 1 lesson with Kiona
My daughter had her first lesson with Kiona today and Mackenzie really liked how patient and understanding she was in explaining everything. As a mom I liked how kind she was and also explained what they worked on.Joy, 1 lesson with Kiona
