About Tammy

I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley earning a BS in Molecular Toxicology. I am a true lifelong learner with a background in physical therapy and pharmacy. At the same time I was taking prerequisite courses for professional school, I worked at a tutoring center where I became one of their main tutors because of the variety of subjects that I tutored and for the results that the students were achieving. What I learned observing other tutors was that often times, material was merely presented but not taught. This is a common phenomenon that we have all seen throughout our educational careers. I personally find that the most effective learning involves an interaction between a student and a teacher to ensure that the student understands the caliber of excellence that is to be met.

After a year at the tutoring center, I became a private tutor and have been tutoring in home ever since. I present lessons in a way that does not intimidate and I have the students practice until they have mastered the concepts. Come test time, I create mock exams that produce a testing simulation similar to exam day. This way, I find students are less surprised and less anxious by what is presented on the test because they have seen something very similar during tutoring. By creating a calm learning environment, void of any judgement, I find students excel to more than they ever could realize.

I tutor all ages but I mainly see middle school and high school students. Subjects that I specialize in are Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy, and Writing. I run 5-week summer preparation programs for those enrolled in Geometry and Algebra II in the Fall to review concepts from Algebra I and to gently introduce new math skills. This way, they build the self-confidence necessary to navigate a busy semester during the Fall. I also tutor SAT Math.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is a crucial crossroad that often can impact the success of a student in future math courses. I focus on being detailed and organized to ensure that the student feels confident moving forward into more difficult courses. I am laid back and feel this allows the student to relax so they can focus on learning.

Algebra 2

Algebra II requires a conquering of a level of more complex math that students have not seen before. I find that patience is key to learning this subject. In my private practice, I feel that every detail counts when learning Algebra II. I make sure that students understand what is expected in order to succeed.

Anatomy

I have worked in physical therapy for over 5 years in which I have utilized the anatomy learned in school. I have also aced my college anatomy and physiology courses and found different organizational strategies that helped me along the way. I get very passionate when teaching anatomy, adding real life examples so it is easier for students to remember the concepts.

Biology

With a background in healthcare and science, I have been teaching biology to high school students for over 7 years. I actively engage with students in the learning process to ensure that you understand exactly what you need to know for the test.

Chemistry

Besides acing my general chemistry courses, I have been tutoring chemistry for over seven years. There are only so many ways that a chemistry question can be asked. I show students how to tackle different kinds of questions and help them through the math portions as well.

Geometry

I find Geometry is actually the beginning of logic based learning and can impact how a student digests information even outside of math. For geometry, proofs are a large part of confusion for students. I believe step by step instruction allows students to identify patterns that do indeed exist. I like to show students how to do a problem and then let them figure it out a similar question on their own. This ensures a mastering of the concept.

Prealgebra

I have had students that have tutored with me from prealgebra all the way through algebra, geometry, and algebra II. The art of seeing math as a pattern is important for students to see. I find keeping the environment calm and laid back allows students to realize their own mistakes which ultimately encourages memories to form. Success in prealgebra is integral to doing well in algebra so I highly encourage needed assistance early on.

SAT Math

I have been tutoring SAT for the past 3 summers. I find that practice and time spent with the material is key. I teach students the fastest yet effective way to get the correct answer. I assign homework and gauge the progress of students to ensure that scores are improving.
