My name is Kristin. I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Early Childhood Education, (K-3), from Worcester State College. I have 20 years teaching experience ranging from preschool to 3rd grade. My experience has included teaching children with all kinds of different needs and learning styles. I am also the mother of three and see things from the parents' view. That your child is very special and deserves the best of everything and that you want to see them succeed in all that they do.
Children learn in many different ways. Young children usually learn best with a hands on approach, small books for them to handle and explore, manipulatives to work out math problems and various medias for writing. It is sometimes a process of what works best for the child and to get the parents input of what they like (Superheroes, sports, Disney) and incorporate that into the learning so that they find it fun and interesting. It also helps if you have a schedule for your time with the children, so they know what to expect. This way they know what tasks we are going to do and that when we finish that we can do a fun activity or game at the end.
As an educator of young children it gives you such a thrill when a child reads a book after struggling on sounding out every word and the joy of seeing that child smile and be so proud of them self. I wish to share a story of a boy that I had in my class a few years ago. He struggled with many of the beginning reading skills and we worked on these in small groups and he made good progress. one day the children we're reading to themselves and I was stopping and listening to them When I came to this boy, he was reading a book at his level fluently and using the strategies taught to figure out meaning and if he found a word he didn't know. As I sat and listened to him the tears started to run down my cheeks. He thought something was wrong but I explained that they were tears of joy, that he had worked so hard and are a wonderful reader and I was so proud of him. Those moments are what make teaching so worth while. Children are like sponges and if we provide the moisture of learning they will soak it in! Hello!
