Clark University (History)
My name is Marisa, I'm a current student at Clark University, looking to tutor some area students as a part-time job. I was homeschooled through high school so I have a lot of experience with alternative teaching methods, and I will work with your student to find the solutions that will help your student learn best. I have had experience in childcare for the last 5 years, and though my experience is mainly with younger children, I would be happy to work with middle and high school students as well. I have experience working with education through my childcare experience, helping children with their homework. I also worked as a teaching aide for almost a year working in an early literacy program (teaching children how to read and write).
As a tutor, I will identify the areas in which the student is struggling, and come to each lesson armed with a variety of tools and strategies to help them succeed. I will create a step-by-step plan to address each aspect of the student's area of difficulty, and adjust that plan according to any new progress or obstacle that may come up during my time working with the student.
On the first lesson, I will engage in dialogue with you and the student in order to assess the nature of the student's tutoring needs, and, if appropriate, administer a practice test of some kind to appraise where my tutoring efforts would be best be focused. I want to help my students succeed, so your tutoring plan will be individualized to your specific needs, learning abilities, and situation, and adjusted according to your progress. I want you to get the best value for your money and improve not just in grades, but in understanding of your subject matter. I will not do the work for you - I will instead give you strategies and work that will help you understand it better, and succeed in the best way possible.
I look forward to working with you!

Marisa has been an excellent tutor for my son who's suffering from an emotional disorder. She has found the right balance to cover a lot of material, yet not overwhelm him. I am very impressed!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a homeschooled student, I had a few extra barriers to the college application process than most students. I had to submit and organize a lot of extra forms, and I didn't have a guidance counselor or an official school institution to help me with it. I had to have a significant understanding of the application process and college search tools in order to be successful.
I successfully navigated my own college application process, getting accepted to 4 of the 5 schools I applied to, and have assisted other people in my schooling network through their college searches. I would be happy to assist anyone with their application process.
I have been cooking meals from scratch for over eight years, and have done a substantial amount of personal research into nutrition, balanced eating and I have many years of experience preparing inexpensive, easy meals from a variety of cuisines. I have also taught several people in my life how to cook for themselves and stop depending on fast food and frozen meals.
In addition to personal experience assisting babysitting clients with their homework, I have assisted with and observed my younger sisters' homeschooling education. I also worked as a teaching aide at the Office of Children, Youth and Learning in Cumberland, Rhode Island in a literacy program for children.
I own a Mac and use it heavily for school and work. I have owned Macs for many years as well as PCs and feel competent to be able to teach users how to operate one.
