About Susan

I am a seasoned tutor who also worked as a professional writer and editor with 26 years experience in the field. Most recently, I taught ESL full-time for 6.5 years at a private high school in Central Mass. I am currently working on my Masters in Education with a concentration in Teaching English as a Second Language. I completed an 80-hour TEFL Certificate Program through Bridge Education Group, Inc., which is accredited by ACCET, a U.S. Department of Education Recognized Agency. I completed coursework in lesson planning, teaching young learners and teaching business English.

I have been tutoring students in many subjects — including ESL, English literature, writing, history, social studies, government, psychology, and sociology — since I graduated from Clark University with Honors in English. I have worked with middle school, high school, undergraduate and graduate level students since that time.

I have also worked successfully with students from under-served populations, whose English and grammar needed much work, as well as international and ESL students. One of my greatest success stories is my help with a university student who was born in Granada before moving to NYC for high school. She was having difficulty with her English literature classes as an undergraduate. Under my guidance, she became a top student who went on to get her master's degree and Ph.D. in English and in turn taught students how to write papers. Today she is a senior researcher for the American Institutes for Research.

I am comfortable working with students from middle school, sixth or seventh grade, to graduate level students. I believe I have a friendly demeanor but I get the job done.

I am a former high school and collegiate athlete. I am willing to work hard and go the extra yard to help others achieve their goals. I am inspired by the work students put forth to excel in their studies and enjoy the opportunity to have a role in that experience.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I was an ESL teacher for 6.5 years and the school ESL department head for 5 years. I taught engaging lessons in all four domains -- reading, writing, listening and speaking. I have attended WIDA and other professional training in teaching English Language Learners, and I am currently working towards a Masters in Education with a concentration in Teaching English as a Second Language at Framingham State University. I have officially been accepted into the FSU aforementioned program.

ESL/ESOL

I taught ESL classes, both integrated classes where all 4 domains (reading, writing, speaking and listening) were taught, and I taught separate classes on grammar, reading and writing as well as reading and writing. I am taking time of to pursue my M.Ed. at Framingham State University where I have been accepted into the M.Ed. program with a concentration in Teaching English as a Second Language. In the spring of 2016, I completed an 80-Hour TEFL Educator Certificate program from Bridge Education Group, which is accredited by ACCET, a U.S. Department of Education Recognized Agency. I completed coursework in lesson planning, teaching young learners and teaching business English.

Grammar

I taught grammar classes at a private junior-senior high school in Worcester, Mass. I am currently enrolled at Framingham State University's Masters in Education (M.Ed.) program and my concentration is Teaching English as a Second Language. Learning more about syntax -- including grammar -- is a part of this program.

Excellent Tutor

Susan is a fantastic tutor. My daughter had a lesson with her for the first time, and she really liked the lesson. Her strategies for the critical reading section are very helpful, and she gives great advice. She also has quick and easy strategies for the writing section as well. She is well organized and is skillful at preparing students for the SATs.
