About John

Communication is the most important part of teaching. Often students are performing poorly because they do not understand the underlying concepts needed for their success. By listening to a student's concerns and probing with Socratic questions, great progress can be achieved. This is a superior technique to simple rote learning.

As a former college, high school, middle school teacher, and science and math tutor, I have the experience to effectively tutor.

As an acclaimed speaker at institutional investor conferences, I also have a finely honed awareness of the methodology needed to keep people engaged and receptive to learning.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Study Skills

Study skills consist of two main elements: physical organization and prioritization of material being studied. Either or both can be problems. I work with adults studying for the three years worth of exams to become a CFA. Given the amount of material, it is important for students to learn how to assess the importance of what they are reading and concentrate on the core issues, not the peripheral anecdotes.

Physically, students need to organize their notes so that they are effective review tool. Six major topics are covered in each CFA exam so notes need to be legible, concise, meaningful, and organized.

It often takes months of work to get the methodology for good study skills but once done, they last forever.
