I am licensed in Massachusetts to teach grades prekindergarten through 6th grade, and am currently teaching in Lynn Public Schools as a Reading Specialist. I am working on my Orton Gillingham certification and have had many successes in teaching struggling students.
I have had extensive training in teaching reading and can make an impact on skills quickly. Besides Orton-Gillngham, I am familiar with Wilsons Fundations, Reading Street, Trophies, Handwriting Without Tears, among many others. I have a multisensory apporach in teaching reading, with tools such as letter tiles, salt boxes, board games, an IPad, various software and teaching strategies. In addition, I have experience in Math Connects, Singapore Math, IXL, and other math programs.
Having three children of my own, and 10 years in teaching, I am able to find the learning style of most any child, and can quickly adapt my teachings to their modalities. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I graduated from the Northeastern University Bridge to Teaching Program 2 years ago, summa cum laude. I received my BS with 1 year of internship in a Boston Public School, first grade. I currently hold a license to teach Early Childhood as well as a license to teach Elementary Education in Massachusetts.
Prior to that, I was a lead teacher in a private school for 6 years. I taught a class of preKindergarten students. Many of the children were English Language Learners. My curriculum included phonemic awareness, prereading/phonics skills, reading, concrete operational thinking, and emergent math concepts. Our science and social studies units were hands on, and all of my lessons followed the Massachusetts Frameworks Guidelines.
I currently teach a Kindergarten class. This is my second year at this grade level. My lessons follow the Common Core Standards and are differentiated to encompass all levels, abilities, and learning styles. I am an effective classroom and reading teacher. I have made a huge impact in the math curriculum. Students leaving my class at the end of the year are reading and solving addition and subtraction math equations.
My lessons apply skills to daily life situations. They are fun and engaging. I am well liked and respected by my students. They have all developed a love for learning, while acquiring the skills they need to be successful in future grades.
I use Wilson's Phonics, Fudations, and Handwriting Without Tears, along with many other tools to teach the basics of reading. Extra help with emergent and reading skills can begin as early as Kindergarten and contintue until 2nd grade. I will review basic priniciples of phonics, letter naming, letter sounds, blends, digraphs, phoneme segmentation and blending, individual comprehension and reading levels through running records, along with progress monitoring through DIBELS.
I have completed my course work for my masters as a Reading Specialist at Gordon College. Gordon is one of 17 colleges in the nation that is accredited by the International Dyslexia Assoc. My training has been rigorous. I am currently employed as a reading specialist. I am in the middle of my Orton-Gillingham year-long certification which will be completed soon.
