As a retired English teacher of thirty-three years, I have an extensive background in education, having spent the last ten years of my career supervising and designing curriculum for the English department at Swampscott High School, as well as working part-time at Newbury College. During the first three years of my retirement, I tutored a Boston University student in all her subjects. After working with me, her grade point average changed from 72 to 82. She recently graduated and I am looking for another tutoring position.
Working one-on-one with students allows me to closely observe individual learning styles and thereby to personalize instruction. Having worked with many students with a variety of backgrounds, special needs, and educational settings -- including the migrant worker program in Lowell, a college readiness program at Regis College, and special education in Boston, and the gifted and talent program in Swampscott -- I have developed many teaching techniques that address a broad range of learning. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
