About Rebecca

I am a licensed Massachusetts teacher for English Grades 5-12, and a graduate of Boston University's School of Education earning a B.S in English Education with minors in English and history. Currently, I am enrolled in Boston University's Masters in Education (M.Ed) English Education program. As an English teacher in a high performing Massachusetts district, I teach seniors and freshman English, and have taught freshman in previous years. In the Fall of 2012, I also taught English literature in United Kingdom at an all-boys comprehensive school in London. I was responsible for 90 boys in Years 7-12, and worked with a great variety of students - many of whom had Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), whose native language was not English, or who had been identified as particularly gifted in English. For each of my students, I carefully scaffold and extend lessons, and provided frequent revision sessions for students to strengthen and develop their skills. While the needs of each of my students are quite unique, my greatest asset is my ability to form strong relationships with my students through which they were able to progress as individuals. I look forward to working with your son or daughter as they develop their reading and writing skills and become more confident in English. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

As a graduate of Boston University, I earned a Bachelor of Science in English Education and minors in English and history. I use my additional background in history to inform my English lessons which I teach at the high school level; however, many of the skills used in my English classroom are equally applicable to the history classroom.

English

I am licensed to teach English in Massachusetts Grades 5-12 through the Massachusetts Department of Education.

Grammar

I am licensed to teach English in Massachusetts Grades 5-12 through the Massachusetts Department of Education.

Literature

I am licensed to teach English in Massachusetts Grades 5-12 through the Massachusetts Department of Education. Most recently, I taught a unit on "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck, and poetry by Edgar Allen Poe scaffolded specifically for students whose first language was not English.

Proofreading

I am a high school English teacher certified by the Massachusetts Department of Education to teach English to Grades 9-12. It is an integral part of my career to be able to proofread student papers for clarity, grammar, spelling, structural organization, and strength of argument.

Reading

I am licensed to teach English in Massachusetts Grades 5-12 through the Massachusetts Department of Education.

SAT Reading

I am licensed to teach English in Massachusetts Grades 5-12 through the Massachusetts Department of Education. I find it to be especially useful to walk students through the process of taking the Critical Reading exam, focusing conversations on the thought process required to analyze given passages and deconstruct the questions and answers given. These conversations allow students to explain how they would approach a variety of question types and fine tune their question analysis skills as they become familiar with the style of standardized test questions.

Softball

Though I was a softball player since I was very young, I was a four year starter and varsity athlete at the high school level. I also earned the Massachusetts All-Star award for my conference in 2007 and 2009. While I have in depth knowledge of both infield and outfield positions, I specialize in the shortstop, third base, and second base positions.

Vocabulary

I am licensed in Massachusetts to teach English in Grades 5-12. This includes vocabulary lessons integrated into the context of any English lesson aimed at stretching and improving student vocabulary.

Writing

I am licensed to teach English in Massachusetts in Grades 5-12.

Super Helpful!

Becca helped my high school son deepen his understanding of a book and write two analytical paragraphs in an hour - amazing! He was very comfortable with her and found it extremely useful. Awesome!
