Hi, I'm Rachel! I’m an incoming sophomore at Westfield State University with a 3.84 GPA. I’m an Honors Student and am on the Dean’s List. I volunteered as a teacher’s assistant for an AP English Language class in my senior year of high school, after having taken the class the year prior. I also took the AP English Literature class and was President of my high school's Creative Writing Club for two years. I’m currently attending Westfield State University as an English Major and am pursuing Secondary Education Certification.

My experiences at my college and at my high school have prepared me well to tutor students. In particular, working in the AP English Language class gave me a year of excellent training in tutoring. The students were high school juniors preparing for the college-level AP English Language exam. The class focused on analyzing and developing rhetorical style using tools like ethos, pathos, and logos. I organized lesson plans, graded exams, led class discussions, ran classroom activities, and helped the teacher address questions and check progress during independent activities. I was even given the chance to plan, prepare for, and execute lessons on my own. I focused on interactive activities that helped students memorize and grasp concepts rather than just giving them answers because I found that students remembered and engaged with the material more when working hands-on. For example, when I taught a lesson on addressing counterarguments, rather than simply lecturing, I chose to pair the students and have them debate issues such as summer versus winter, romantic comedies versus action movies, et cetera, so they could practice anticipating and responding to criticisms in their arguments.

I love working with all facets of English, from grammar to reading proficiency; my favorite, however, is writing. I'm very adept at drafting, editing, and proofreading papers. Throughout high school and college, I would often work with my friends to help polish their important essays. Many of the activities I ran independently while I worked in the AP English Language class centered around how to outline an essay and how to write under a time constraint.

Besides my experience in teaching the subject, I've also proven my capabilities in tutoring English through my grades. In high school, I received 4s on both the AP English Language and AP English Literature exams. I've received top grades in all the English classes I've taken thus far in college, which include Native American Literature, Creative Writing, and Composition.

I live off-campus in Westfield and am available during the school year, summer, and breaks. I'm easily reachable both by call and email, and I have a very open schedule. Feel free to contact me at any time!
