Westfield State University (Psychology)
Hi! My name is Ana and I am currently enrolled at Westfield State University as a freshman to pursue my Master's degree in Psychology and a Minor in French. During my senior year of high school, I had the privilege to work with children in various settings such as tutoring middle school students, working in a second grade classroom as an intern, working at a summer camp for local kids, and most important to me, teaching younger dancers the passion I have gained for dance.
As part of National Honor Society, I had the opportunity to tutor middle school students at the House of Peace and Education in Gardner, MA. The program allowed the students to progress in all academic fields, but was also focused on building self-confidence and social skills. Being assigned only a few students to work with, it really gave me a chance to personalize with them, relate to their situations, and offer my support with any struggles they were facing. Tutoring and mentoring showed me how passionate I was about working with younger students to help them see the potential they have in themselves, and show them what a successful life they have ahead of them. As most of them came from low income homes or foster families, it was more than rewarding to see the growth in not only their grades, but social skills and happiness as well.
I've experienced working with children as young as 3 and as old as 16. At my local dance studio I have danced at for 15 years, I got to see the techniques of being a dance teacher and how important it was to encourage the dancers to work to their best ability. For high school credits my senior year, I had the pleasure to be an intern in a second grade classroom and shadow the teacher to learn all the basics of being a school teacher. I found such joy in working with young children and teaching them basic academic skills. The light in their faces as they began to understand new lessons made me truly love working in the school. My summer job was at a local park for many children who didn't necessarily have a stable living condition. The camp was a counseling position that helped them work on talking out their problems, learning healthy ways to spend their extra time, and understand how important it was to maintain confidence. All of these experiences have reinforced my love for working with others, and I am so excited to start my career working as a counselor/teacher. Hi! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
