About Andrew

Hello! My name's Andy. I'm a reading intervention tutor at East Windsor High School currently, a position I've held since the fall of 2015. Prior to that, I was a building substitute and then intervention tutor at the Middle School in the same district in 2014-15. I work in small groups 1-5 students in a full credit course to help students who struggle with reading, writing, decoding, and fluency. I'm a full time member of the staff, and am just finishing my first year at the high school.

A bit about me; you may have noticed that I have a degree in music! Through a slightly strange turn of events I found myself as a reading tutor during the 2014 school year at the middle school in East Windsor, a position I shortly discovered that I loved. I find that being a musician helps me keep lessons creative, fun and engaging while also being meticulous and thorough. Learning music and learning language are very similar in practice, so I've been able to draw a lot on my experience as a jazz guitarist and teacher when making my individualized lesson plans for each student. I also teach guitar, I've got a studio of about 15 students, ages ranging from 7 to 73, so I'm comfortable with literally every age group.

I've been highly successful at my current position as an intervention tutor. Working closely with the district reading coach, I've developed many of my students into fluent, at or above benchmark readers over the course of the year. Every quarter I have more and more students "graduating" from my program and going on to maintain proficiency at reading.

My teaching philosophy is to try and keep lessons as fun and engaging as possible. I've always found that the lessons I've remembered the easiest, and absorbed the most with, were ones where I either had a lot of fun, or had a strong interest in the lesson, even if the subject was something outside my comfort zone. Trying to keep that in mind, I spend a lot of time researching and personalizing each of my lessons with students to get to the heart of what they need help with, while keeping them happy and engaged. I'd love to hear from you if you think this approach would work for you or your child!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I'm currently a reading tutor in a public school system, and part of my day to day work is helping prep kids for their SAT or ACT test. Both tests are similar in structure although the ACT focuses a bit more on longer passages, so building reading stamina and comprehension skills is a must for success

Ear Training

I attended the Hartt School of Music, attaining a bachelor of music degree in 2012. I took 4 semesters of ear training, studying the Kodaly method of solfeggio. I've been teaching guitar for the past 4 years, and incorporate ear training, sight singing, and music theory in my lessons alongside playing

English

I'm a reading interventionist, with experience helping students excel at decoding, fluency, grammar, writing skills, and comprehension. I've worked with both middle (starting in 5th grade) and high school students full time in a high school, and am well attuned to the needs of both age groups.

Guitar

I've been playing guitar for 14 years now, studying privately for 8. My focus instrument was Jazz Guitar school, where I studied under the school's guitar instructor, and took masterclasses from professional, and sometimes historic, jazz players. I've been teaching guitar privately for the past 4 years

Music Production

I was a Music Production and Technology major in college. My program was a 4 year intensive program going through everything from microphone design/operating principles, to recording techniques and projects. I was also the staff engineer my junior and senior year of college, and have since opened my own professional studio in Amherst, MA

Music Theory

I went to a music conservatory where my courses included six semesters of music theory, starting with diatonic harmony and continuing up through post tonal form.

Proofreading

I've been tutoring for two years now, and spend a good portion of my days working with students in editing and revising papers. Common things like grammar and spelling, as well as sentence/thought clarity are areas I always focus on when going through my students' writing.

Writing

I've been a tutor in writing for the past two years. I mostly work with high school students but I can help edit papers at all levels.
