I earned my Bachelor's degree in English with a minor in Philosophy. I have always had a fascination philosophical texts, paradoxes being among my favorites to decipher. I have experience working with Western, Asian and Ethical Philosophy.
As an English Major, I was exposed to genres ranging from Satire to Southern Gothic and almost everything in between. My love for reading goes well beyond simply picking up a book. My interest lies in the foundation of literacy, without which strong readers can not develop.
As a former under-served student in the city of Boston, I believe everyone should have access to the tools necessary for their academic success.
After spending 3 years as a K-5 Educator for the YMCA of Greater Boston, I decided to shift my focus to becoming an Academic Teacher with a specialization in Reading.
Having worked one on one and in small groups, I have seen the positive impact that type of environment has on the learning experience of my pupils; Tutoring allows me to work in a similar environment. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an undergraduate, I took several History courses, including 2 American History and 2 Western Civilization courses. I have a continuing interest in American History and have been actively adding to my knowledge of the subject.
I earned a Bachelors degree in English, from the University of Massachusetts Boston. Throughout my time as an ungraduate I read works of literature from authors such as Shakespeare, Hemingway, Milton and Faulkner. My repertoire includes poetry, novels, short stories and plays.
Excellent Reading and comprehension are mandatory skills for completion of an English degree. I have always had an interest reading and deciphering difficult text and was able to do that during my undergrad studies. I do have experience working with school aged children to develop stronger reading skills in an after school and summer camp setting.
