Math Mom Ellen - I am a former Engineer in high tech and Middle school math teacher. Math Mom Ellen - I am a former Engineer in high tech and Middle school math teacher. With more than 15 years' teaching and tutoring experience, I know that all children can have success with math - they can internalize a positive, healthy idea that "I'm getting pretty good at this, and I even find this interesting." This is one of the most important attitudes to develop in young minds that will last through their school years and into college and adulthood. We want to prevent the child who falls behind in arithmetic or mathematics in grade school or later from being at risk for avoiding quantitative and technical subjects down the road.

I specialize in Middle School math and ISEE test preparation. I was a remedial Middle School math teacher in Newton, and I have a fondness for teaching prealgebra and Algebra I. I incorporate lots of hands-on practice, my students use lots of paper and pencil to picture the problem before and while solving it, and I teach them to "think on paper" logically and step by step. We repeat problems, ideas and practice through mastery, including good study skills. Students who study for the ISEE with me, including the verbal sections, have all successfully gotten into the school of their choice.

For college-minded parents, invest in your child's education now by getting her or him a good tutor.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra I, II and Geometry for many years. These courses, usually studied in grades 8-10, are the foundation for every student who wants to understand and succeed in math in the future.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Prealgebra makes the transition from concrete arithmetic to the abstract concepts of Algebra I/II and Geometry. As you can see from the Key Topics listed below, getting a good foundation NOW in prealgebra motivates your child to be INTERESTED AND COMPETENT in Algebra I/II and Geometry, so essential for Middle and High School. Key Topics: Whole numbers; prime numbers; word problems; unit multipliers; points, lines, rays, angles, and perimeter; area; volume; graphs; working with fractions; mode, median, and mean; equations; mixed numbers; exponential expressions and roots; decimal, fraction, and percent problems; proportions; ratios; negative numbers; opposites; algebraic phrases; order of operations; variables; parentheses; ratio problems; powers; computing interest; triangles; congruence; bisectors; advanced equations; permutations; equations of a line; conversions.

Test Preparation

ISEE

ISEE

Start this summer to prepare your child for the ISEE. Students whom I have tutored in the ISEE have been admitted to the Boston exam schools and to the private schools of their choice. I provide test-taking strategies, math/English content instruction and confidence-building. I am a certified teacher, have taught hundreds of students, and they benefit from my experience. Your child will have an advantage in getting into the school of your choice, and will also be ahead of the game this September in school. They will have gained a large vocabulary, reading and writing skills, and a rigorous and interesting course of study of math topics and concepts; all is geared toward preparation for the ISEE. The ISEE is the entrance exam for Boston's exam schools and many Boston area private schools. The exam results in a ranking of students in the same grade. The ISEE is typically held in November in the Boston area for admission the following September. The ISEE has three test levels, Lower, Middle and Upper. The Lower Level test is for students currently in grades 4 and 5 who are candidates for admission to grades 5 and 6. The Middle Level test is for students in grades 6 and 7 who are candidates for grades 7 and 8. The Upper Level test is for students in grades 8 through 11 who are candidates for grades 9 through 12. At all levels, the ISEE consists of 4 or 5 parts, depending on the requirements of the school you are applying to: (a) verbal and (b) quantitative reasoning tests that measure a student's capability for learning; (c) reading comprehension and (d) mathematics achievement tests that provide specific information about a student's strengths and weakness in those areas; and (e) an optional essay section. If your child is going to be applying to a school that requires the ISEE test, please contact me.

Ellen was a great tutor, very patient and very accommodating regarding schedule changes.

Ellen helped me with theorems I did not understand and could explain things in different ways if I did not understand the first time. She was willing to stay longer than an hour if I needed the help. She helped me pass geometry.

Highly recommended!

Ellen is knowledgeable and accommodating. Good results. We highly recommend Ellen for Math and English. Our daughter showed immediate improvement.

Terrific!

Ellen is a prompt email and phone responder, and very easy to talk with regarding scheduling and educational needs. She arrived punctually and got right to work with my daughter, working steadily for the next 105 minutes! They were able to cover the homework, review quizzes and study for an upcoming exam. I like Ellen's style of review; she asked my daughter to explain the formula as if she were teaching the material to Ellen. Very creative and interactive, as well as confidence-building. She also gave lots of positive feedback during the lesson, along with clear instruction. All around this was a positive experience.
