About Stephanie

Do you or your child need extra support with reading, writing, or study skills?

I would love to help! I have years of experience working one on one with all types of learners, from kindergarten to college.

I graduated from Assumption College with a 3.9 GPA in English Literature and a minor in Secondary Education. I am a nationally certified CRLA Master Level tutor and am working towards a Wilson Reading Certification. With a TOFL/TEFL certification and training from LVGW, I am especially qualified to work with English Language Learners on reading, writing, vocabulary, and American accent training.

I currently work as a writing tutor at Mount Wachusett Community College and a tutor for the Disability Services Center at Fitchburg State. I love working with adults and college students, and I also know exactly how to prepare a a high school student for college writing.

I look forward to helping you or your child gain the confidence and skills needed for academic success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a minor in secondary education from Assumption College, and one of the classes that I took specially qualified me to teach middle school students, 5-8. I also have over eight years of experience teaching children ages 5-12; I taught 3rd and 6th grade CCD at my church, I worked as a gymnastics teacher, a teacher at an after school program for grades k-6, a swim instructor, and a horse back riding instructor. I am currently tutoring a 5th grader in writing.

English

I have a B.A. in English literature from Assumption College. Publications include: Route 2, L'Esprit, and Fortunates. I tutor Writing Mount Wachusett Community College and at Fitchburg State.

ESL/ESOL

I hold a TEFL/TESOL certification, as well as 18+ hours of training from the Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester. I work with many adults and high school students from all over the world, but especially students from China. I've tutored for companies such as EDUBoston and Corporate Language Workshops. I am also proficient in teaching English pronunciation.

Grammar

I have a strong background in Linguistics which gives me understanding of the structure of English and the history of language. I enjoy showing students how fun grammar can be!

Literature

I hold a B.A. in English literature from Assumption College. I finished with a 3.9 GPA in all of my major courses. I am especially comfortable thinking analytically and using critical approaches to literature.

Reading

Graduate Coursework: Reading Assessment and Disabilities, at Fitchburg State University.

I have a strong background in Literacy, and have tutored many students in better reading strategies. I always encourage students to read interactively and utilize SQ3R methods to better engage with the text. I also help guide students through specific passages, so that they can come to a better understanding of how to read critically.

Study Skills

While tutoring at the Assumption College Academic Support Center, I worked closely with Amy Hurley, the full-time reading and learning specialist. She met with students individually and gave workshops on time management and study skills. I implemented many of these skills myself, and taught them to my tutees, and even delivered several workshops.

Writing

I have worked as a writing tutor at Assumption College, Mount Wachusett Community College, and Fitchburg State University. I love showing students that writing can be a fun and enjoyable form of expression, not frustrating battle.

I have been published in L'Esprit, Fortunates, Route 2, the Poet's Word, etc.

Helpful Tutor!

Stephanie was able to help me formulate ideas and structure for a lesson plan I had to submit for an SEI course. She was able to see things which I was able to see and provide a different way of thinking than mine.
