About Mariah

I love tutoring because I find it exciting to help others understand complex topics in a way that is useful and beneficial. As someone who has been helped by tutors in the past, I believe tutoring is a more efficient way to learn and reach your personal goals and intellectual objectives. I have experience in curriculum development for middle school and high school students through the implementation of targeted summer programs for students in low-income and low-resource communities in Ethiopia and Algeria. My teaching experiences working with a group of 25 students in Ethiopia has taught me the importance of patience and flexibility in teaching and tutoring others, as everyone has their unique learning styles. I will make sure a concept is understood before moving onto the next concept, and also that it is retained. I want to provide a fun but challenging and useful tutoring experience.

I am fluent in speaking Mandarin Chinese and can provide tutoring in speaking Chinese on a working professional capacity. I have attained the California State Seal of Biliteracy for Mandarin Chinese, demonstrating a "high level of proficiency in speaking, reading, writing."

I was an ESL student in the past and so I am familiar with the challenges individuals face in learning and becoming comfortable with learning English. These experiences have made me aware of how hard it is to learn a new language, and I have adopted my teaching style to reflect as such.

I have a flexible schedule from July-September and welcome the opportunity to chat to see if I will be a good fit as a tutor for you. Weekdays and weekends, mornings, late afternoon and evenings are some available times I am available.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I am able to speak Mandarin Chinese fluently. I have taken high school Chinese courses and college courses. I passed the AP Chinese Language exam with a 4 and the SAT II Chinese exam with a score of 700. I use Chinese on a daily basis and translate for clients who speak Chinese at my internship.

Public Speaking

I have been trained in Public Speaking and Rhetoric. I have spoken in small, intimate settings, as well as larger settings of 100+ people. I was the keynote speaker for the California Association of Student Councils in 2015. I was also a speaker for the Shift Network's 11 Days of Global Unity, where I spoke about Children & Youth. I regularly skype into classrooms to connect with youth across the world, and inspire them to take action in their communities to create positive change.

Water Polo

I played water polo in high school for four years and am also involved with my college's club water polo team. It is a passion of mine and I am able to explain/teach the way the game works to others.
