Hello! My name is Andy. I graduated from UMass Amherst in 2022 with a B.S. in computer science, and have approximately 4 years of experience in tutoring various subjects. In high school, I tutored classmates in math and science. While attending college, I worked at the campus student center as a computer science tutor. I also volunteered with an after-school program, where I tutored students from grades 3 to 8 in math. I am conversational in Mandarin, which was my first language, so I also have experience helping English-speaking students to practice Mandarin and Mandarin-speaking students to practice their English. Most of my tutoring experience has been one-on-one, but I have also tutored small groups.
I like to tailor my approach to the specific person that I am working with, as everyone learns differently. Sometimes this means reviewing old material before connecting it to new material, to bolster confidence and deepen understanding; sometimes this means directly approaching new material and learning as we go. Some students benefit from running memorization drills, while others learn better from finding ways to apply concepts outside of the classroom. I have broken down concepts into smaller pieces, walked through examples from textbooks and coursework, reviewed practice exams and past assignments, and helped students come up with study plans. In the context of computer science, I have guided students through debugging, revisited past assignments to help students optimize code, and helped students brainstorm for larger projects - sometimes for school, and sometimes just for fun!
