I am a creative but serious teacher who usually has a great rapport with students. I have over 15 years of teaching experience at levels ranging from Middle School through university. I currently teach in Newton and have many prize-winners in the National Latin Exam, taken each spring.
I take a two-pronged approach to tutoring: the first is to work with students to get them up to date with current material; the second is to find their weaknesses and things they don't understand, and reteach the material or the basics to enable them to catch up. I have fixed problems in as few as 4 sessions, or have worked with reticent students intermittently for two years.
I am familiar with most of the textbooks and, if the student wants me to, I talk with the current teacher to support the student in meeting current expectations.
I can tutor two students in a session, provided they are both equally committed to the task and the chemistry is good, so families can save a little on the tutoring. Also, I am flexible in scheduling sessions, provided I have 24 hours notice.
I should add that I speak French, live in Wellesley, and specialize in Grammar. As a public school teacher in Massachusetts, I have a background check on file, so I have not requested a new one for this position.
Given the recent rise in the cost of gasoline, I might have to negotiate a surcharge if the round trip is more than 40 miles. Please contact me via this website. I look forward to meeting you. Because of the increase in the price of gas and extended travel time, I have to add a surcharge of $10 for students living more than 12 miles from my home.
My niece had a wonderful session with Myrna! I highly recommend to anyone who needs help with Latin!
Thank you Myrna!
My son, a discerning 12 year old boy (aka recalcitrant to tutoring) LOVES Myrna. After the last session, he admitted, "Mom, that was extremely helpful." When does THAT happen??
Myrna W. has been tutoring my son in Latin and English for two years. She is proficient in both subjects and extremely patient. We are so grateful to have found her!
My daughter has been taking Myrna's Latin lessons since this summer 2014. Since my daughter wanted to get a good start with Latin in school, Myrna helped a lot.
Myrna is very helpful with tons of experiences. She is familiar with many different textbooks. My daughter said without Myrna's help, she could not have received an "A+". Thanks!
Mrs. W. has been tutoring my 8th grader for the past few months. She has been a pleasure to work with, my son has been energized in his Latin studies and his grades have shown significant improvement. Mrs. W. has developed a close bond with my son while keeping him focused on the task at hand. I would recommend Mrs. W. highly.
Thanks so much for taking time to write the review. I really enjoy working with your son. He'll be hard to replace, but I thank you for your help. I'll keep some time for him come the end of May. And please be sure he lets me know how the NLE came out for him...probably around the end of April.
Myrna has been great! Patient and kind. My son wants to go every week since he has seen dramtic change in his Latin grades.
Mrs. W. is amazing and her approach to teaching Latin makes it fun and engaging. My daughter is really enjoying her Latin lessons and looks forward to her weekly sessions. We are lucky to have the opportunity to work with such a talented and an amazing educator.
My daughter (11th grader) loved her fun and straightforward style to teaching Latin. Ms. W was patient with my daughters initially shaky grasp of how to translate more complex Latin prose, and has helped her improve her translating skills as well as feel generally more comfortable with the language. She's an awesome tutor!
Thank you, Hijab, for the nice review. I appreciate it.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught for over 15 years, at all levels. I am still teaching in Newton Public Schools. I have been tutoring students for 4 years, so I have re-read all the major texts very recently.
