I've helped many middle school and high school students achieve English and math proficiency, pass qualifying exams, and become part of the "mainstream" of American culture. It doesn't happen overnight, but it does come in time for enthusiastic young people to achieve their career goals while enjoying themselves along the way.
I work with young ESL students on things like vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing. We carry on lots of conversation, read books (continually) for fun, and focus our writing skills on academic exposition. A small amount of "homework" is essential between tutoring sessions. Occasionally, we play word games at our meetings, often with a "borrowed" classmate or friend there too.
In working with adults, I focus on their special requirements - grammar, fluency, writing, or whatever they, and I feel are the greatest need areas limiting their goals.
For math help, I start with the material in the student's school classes, and then add to it by clarifying the topics, using simple examples and exercises in the beginning, and gradually reach toward the full proficiency required by self-confident students. I employ a sense of humor to our discussions and ALWAYS emphasize my interest in the student's knowledge, "insight," and enjoyment of the subject.
I meet with the younger students at their homes (a parent or representative must be on the premises), or at a local public library. Meeting frequency is up to the family, of course. A nominal recommendation is usually 2 or 3 sessions per week for 1 1/2 to 2 hours each. Younger students do better with shorter meetings, while the frequency can be relaxed if the student has more years ahead before high-school graduation.
If we look at the process of becoming proficient in a language of a new country, we see that schoolchildren learn mostly from their peers, and from the environment. Their desire or need to socialize drives their meaningful acquisition of language skills; (I call it "in the hall, and at the mall"). The teacher, or tutor provides a framework for a better understanding of how the language works, and provides an opportunity for more practice and attention to the details needed for academic work. The young students will learn despite us - but we smooth the way, and make their accomplishments better.
Similar attitudes and goals apply to tutoring in Math. I have extensive experience in Math as an academic endeavor AND as a practical requirement in commercial activities such as engineering. I am currently working with students of basic Math in the workplace.
In the case of busy adults, the supporting opportunities for student practice are often less, making the task of achieving fluency in English more demanding. So, we have to work harder, and look farther for practice opportunities.
My hourly rate is listed at $50. This is the maximum figure, and allows for reduction based on circumstances. Rates are negotiable depending on circumstances.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
