About Andrew

Chemistry and Math can be all of the above (easy, kind of tough, a pain) - I speak from experience, having been frustrated at times by both subjects! Yet you can certainly overcome difficulties in each with the right instruction and motivation.

After graduating from college with a BS in Chemistry (and a math minor), I gained experience as a chemistry Teaching Assistant for three years in grad school. Having since worked at several biotech / pharmaceutical companies, I'm uniquely positioned in that my chemistry, biochemistry, and math skills have been applied in real-world environments. From quantum mechanical principles of bonding atoms, to elaborate signal transduction pathways in mammalian cells, an understanding of chemistry has been professionally and personally rewarding - and I hope that I can help students overcome their challenges and foster a greater appreciation of science.

While primarily focusing on tutoring chemistry at multiple levels, I can gladly assist with math (from algebra to calculus), biochemistry, and a variety of physical and life science subjects. Helping students with test preparation, including standardized exams, as well as with test-taking strategies is also where I may be of service. Please feel free to inquire about your particular learning needs, time constraints (as necessary - e.g., three weeks until an exam) and overall goals which my tutoring can help you achieve.

As a former Mechanical Engineering student, the challenges in transitioning from high-school to engineering-level calculus were numerous. Tenacity coupled with good tutoring helped me succeed in calculus, which was required at the "University-level" for a degree in Chemistry.

Even before earning a BS in Chemistry, I marveled at how the subject was central to understanding the natural world. Yet I have found numerous examples of students whose approach to this science has been with trepidation, often stemming from poor instruction early in their education. I hope to help students having difficulties with Chemistry to overcome these limitations and be successful in their scientific endeavors.

My experiences as a university Teaching Assistant has included working with students in need of reasonable accommodations. The challenges that these students often face stems not from their innate ability to master the scientific material, but being able to have manageable study sessions for effective learning. A particularly difficult problem or concept within a lesson can itself be a distraction; I feel that having numerous, example-based ways of explaining many science and math concepts has made for an effective instruction of students with a variety of learning profiles.

I hope your overall studies are going well, and look forward to being able to help you with your learning goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Organic Chemistry

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (Bridgewater State University), where success in Organic Chemistry I and Organic Chemistry II was necessary in order to pursue advanced courses required for the degree. As an undergraduate, I performed research involved the chemical synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of a small-molecule SH2 domain antagonist. Areas of focus in Organic Chemistry required for such research involved understanding basic reaction mechanisms for synthesis (sn1, sn2, e1, e2), solvent properties for optimizing yield (e.g. organic versus polar), and directing electrophilic aromatic substitutions (electron donating / electron-withdrawing). Knowledge of other fundamental organic chemistry topics include stereochemistry and molecular orbital theories of bonding structure. An understanding of spectroscopic methods includes thin-layer chromatography, UV/Vis spectrophotometry, FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. Structural and physical properties of biomolecules was built upon in biochemistry, rooted in Organic Chemistry; success with my degree enabled my acceptance into graduate school, where I served as a teaching assistant in chemistry for three years and took advanced courses in chemistry including Organic Synthesis. I thrive on providing instruction in such chemical principles. My knowledge of Organic Chemistry has engendered a deeper understanding of biochemistry and the chemical underpinnings of living systems, which has made for a successful career in the biotech / pharmaceutical sector.
