About Kate

I offer science and math teaching for under-challenged, over-challenged, home schooled, twice-exceptional, interrupted, and other non-traditional learners. I have nine years of experience as a teacher, and have been a dedicated private tutor for the past three. I've worked with many wonderful students who are constantly teaching me that there's a different "best teaching strategy" for every learner.

The modern classroom doesn't serve the needs of all students. Too many students believe that they are "bad at math", or "bad at science", when their real struggle has been with the demands of one-size-fits-all education. Some students miss out on learning in school because they have their own troubles at home in life, or with specific teachers or teaching styles. And some subjects - such as Evolution - are simply not taught in all school systems.

I use diagnostic probes to explore students' mathematical thinking and help to shore up their knowledge gaps. Mathematics particularly is a subject where knowledge gaps in elementary arithmetic and algebra can cause cascading problems. A student who can easily factor a quadratic equation with multiple techniques may misunderstand "simpler" ideas, such as the meaning of negative exponents. A student who can visualize compound transformations of a sine function on a graph may struggle with fractions and ratios. A student who can solve complex equations in her head might be lost when presented with a number line. Each of these students may appear to be doing very well or very poorly, and their real abilities and needs can be obscured.

My teaching background: I've been a private tutor since 2013. I have hundreds of hours experience with a wide variety of students in family and academic settings. I also have seven semesters of teaching experience as an Associate Instructor at Indiana University. I know what college professors expect incoming first-year students to have learned in high school.

My academic background: I have a BA in Mathematics from Wesleyan University, and a Master's (ALM) in Natural Sciences from Harvard Extension School. I'm currently writing my dissertation for a PhD in Evolutionary Biology from Indiana University. I use computer simulations and mathematical analysis to study the effect of population size on the evolution of sexual recombination.

Thank you for reading my profile! I hope you find the tutor who's right for you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have a BA in Mathematics. I have been specifically trained by tutoring specialists to tutor the ACT, and I have seven semesters of teaching experience at the undergraduate college level.

Genetics

I have substantial graduate training in genetics and genomics. My PhD minor is in genetics. My teaching duties as a grad student have included most aspects of human and model organism genetics, including epigenetics, epistasis, mendelian genetics, Punnet squares and their typical variations (such as dihybrid crosses), and the history of the modern synthesis of genetic and evolutionary theory.

Wonderful, patient and helpful

Kate has been very helpful and supportive helping our daughter with her 9th grade physics. Our daughter has a mild learning disability and Kate has worked effectively with her so that she feels confident with her physics material. Further, Kate is reliable, patient and skilled. Highly recommend her.
